Nearly a year after The Overature Center's president resigned amidst a flurry of sexual harassment allegations, Mayor Dave Cieslewicz has appointed Thomas Carto to head the troubled cultural center.
Carto will succeed Interim Director Michael Goldberg to the position.
""Tom Carto is extremely well-qualified to take on both the opportunities and challenges that come with leading the Overture Center,"" Cieslewicz said in a statement. ""[He] will help Overture fulfill its potential in the years to come. He possesses the critical combination of development expertise, programming knowledge, innovative outreach ideas and overall facility management experience that will make Overture not only successful, but an integral part of every corner of our diverse community.""
Prior to his new appointment, Carto, himself a composer, had served as head of the Renaissance Performing Arts Association in Mansfield, Ohio since 1996.
Former president Robert D'Angelo's sexual harassment woes came on the heels of a multimillion-dollar renovation of the institution and amid continuous news of financial problems.
Carto is expected to take on his new duties at the beginning of 2007. According to the release, he will focus on alleviating the Overture's financial hardships.
