Moped permits $55, good for academic year

Students receiving mopeds as holiday gifts may be disappointed to find out that the UW Transportation Services' $55 annual parking permit fee that began Sept. 1 only lasts until Aug. 31, 2007—not until exactly one year after the permit is paid.

""The $55 permit will run the whole calendar year, from Sept. 1 to Aug. 31, 2007,"" said UW Transportation Services Field Manager Patrick Litza. ""That's the way it is for vehicles, for motorcycles, so to get the full benefit of it, it should have been purchased by Sept. 1.""

UW-Madison senior and campus moped driver David Powell said he was not aware he had to buy the permit by Sept. 1 to receive the full benefits of its time restraint. He said if he had decided to bring his moped to campus later than the beginning of September, the permit's time restraint ""probably"" would have deterred him from bringing it.

In September 2005, UW Transportation Services redistributed moped parking places and began enforcing parking violations more strictly. The $55 is $20 less than a motorcycle permit and $80 less than a regular vehicle permit.
