A countrywide outbreak of E. coli killed one person and sickened 20 in Wisconsin, officials announced Thursday.
The outbreak has sickened a total of 50 people in eight states including Connecticut, Michigan, Idaho, Utah, Indiana, Oregon and New Mexico. Wisconsin counties reporting the disease include Dane, Milwaukee, Waukesha, Racine and Ozaukee.
The bacteria has been linked to bags of fresh, washed spinach and FDA officials are cautioning consumers to avoid it. Bagged salads do not appear to carry the bacteria but washing all bagged vegetables is encouraged.
E. Coli can also be spread through the consumption of undercooked meat or by contact with fecal matter.
