Gov. Jim Doyle vetoed 10 bills Wednesday, many of which had to do with educational proposals.
Among the vetoed legislation was Assembly Bill 84, which would have allowedthe school year to be shortened from the 180-day requirement. To accomplish this, the bill proposed lengthening the average school day but reducing the actual number of days on the calendar.
Lengthening the school day by 10 minutes—equivalent to less than two minutes per class period—would allow school districts to take five full days off the school calendar,\ Gov. Doyle said in a statement. ""I do not believe 10 extra minutes a day will lead to the same amount of learning as an additional week of school.""
The Wisconsin Education Association Council said they supported Doyle's decision on ""the five anti-education bills"" in a statement, but added it was ""disheartening"" to have state legislators favoring a bill lowering school standards.
