Academics, drug charges hamper UW sophomoresSophomore defensive lineman Gino Cruse Jr. and sophomore defensive back Antonio Freeman will not be returning to the Badgers football team in the fall, according to a press release sent out by UW Athletic Communications Tuesday.
After several discussions with both Gino and Antonio, I felt it would be in the best interests of both student-athletes and the Wisconsin football program if they did not return to the program,\ first-year head coach Bret Bielema said in the release.
Cruse had not been participating in spring practices due to academic reasons.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Freeman, suspended indefinitely from the Badgers in January for possession of marijuana in Jefferson County, had inquired about transferring to UW-Whitewhater, the Division III Championship runner up. The former Wauwatosa West standout was put into a first offender's program. Upon completion of the six-month rehabilitation program, Freeman would not be suspended.Depth charts announced
Bielema released the Badgers' post-spring practice depth chart Tuesday. Redshirt freshman P.J. Hill headed up the running back list beating out junior Jamil Walker and senior Dywon Rowan. Juniors Marcus Randle El and Paul Hubbard topped the wide-out lists.
Also notable was Jaevery McFadden's switch over to linebacker from tight end and Mark Gorman's position switch back to the other side, from offensive line to defensive line.
