In response to a possible security threat, the Division of Information Technology has forced a system administrator to shut down a worldwide academic hacking challenge.
David Schroeder, a systems administrator at DoIT, on Monday set up a single Mac Mini desktop computer and put out a call to hackers worldwide to attempt to hack and deface the website which it was hosting. On Wednesday, two days prior to the scheduled end date, supervisors at DoIT determined that the test posed a security threat to the campus network and forced Schoeder to unhook it. As of the forced shutdown, no one had successfully hacked the system in over 4,000 attempts and 36 hours.
