The state Assembly passed a proposal Tuesday strengthening Ecstasy penalties, making the punishments closer in line with similar hallucinogenic drugs.
The bill's author, state Rep. Eugene Hahn, R-Cambria, said current law does not allow for appropriate punishment for those charged with Ecstasy use.
The penalty is not where it should be, compared to other drugs,\ Hahn said. ""We're putting it in the same category as LSD-type drugs.""
Under this proposal, first-time offenses could be fined up to $5,000 with one year in jail, and a second offense up to $10,000 in fines with a maximum of three and a half years in jail.
