Baker’s Too suffers significant burglary, vandalism

A popular Madison eatery will be closed for the near future after burglars let loose on Baker's Too, 12 University Sq., early Saturday morning.

According to co-owner Deb Henry, the burglary was particularly vicious. And since the perpetrators went above and beyond taking money and equipment from Baker's Too, the restaurant will have to spend this week putting the pieces back together.

Henry said she got a call about the burglary Saturday morning and quickly went to the scene. Once there, she spent the early hours of Madison's coldest day in years picking through the broken glass and wreckage of her restaurant.

'Somebody had smashed in one of our arched windows and actually left the hammer laying there,' Henry said. '[The window] just shattered all the way back into the work area.'

With the window gone and temperatures remaining below zero, Baker's Too suffered beyond losing the money in its cash register.

'It was actually about 30 below in the shop,' Henry said. 'My water lines froze up, my coffee lines froze up, there was glass everywhere.'

Henry said she was most hurt by the damage the restaurant sustained in the burglary.

'I can deal with the cash,' Henry said. 'You robbed me. But did you have to trash my files and throw them all over and make such a mess'?

As a result of the pipe damage and organizational disorder, Baker's Too has to do a lot more than replace a window. According to Henry, the restaurant will not re-open until late this week at the earliest.

'We hated to close,' Henry said. 'We just didn't want to have to do that.'

Police have told Henry an investigation into the burglary is ongoing and they do not have any suspects in the crime.

UW-Madison sophomore and Baker's Too employee Maggie Corry said she was surprised by the burglary. She works at the Copper Gable Caf??, also owned by Henry and co-owner Dar Phillips, but will not be reporting to Baker's Too for her usual shifts this week.

'I don't know who would want to do that, why they would target that place,' Corry said. 'I have no idea why.'

Henry said she and Phillips were struggling to understand why anybody would want to damage Baker's Too so significantly.

'We're really sad,' she said. 'It just made us sad.'
