The No. 5 Wisconsin women's hockey team (5-1-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association, 7-1-0 overall) earned its third sweep of the season this weekend, taking out St. Cloud State (2-6-0, 2-6-0) with 7-0 and 7-1 victories on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Sophomore forward Lindsay Macy had four goals and one assist on the weekend, while fellow sophomore forward Sara Bauer pitched in four goals and four assists, including a hat trick in Friday's game. The two worked together, since Bauer assisted on each of Macy's four goals.
\Sara has gotten off to a good start,"" Wisconsin Head Coach Mark Johnson said. ""She's already got a couple hat tricks early on in the season so, like everybody, she'll just continue to get better.""
The Badgers dominated Friday's game with 50 shots on goal to the Huskies' 16. They took advantage of special teams, converting on two of five power plays while stopping all three of their penalty kills.
St. Cloud freshman goalie Kendall Newell did all that she could, stopping 43 shots. Meanwhile, Wisconsin junior goalie Meghan Horras shined in her second shutout of the season, improving her goals against average to 0.75 goals per game.
""Meghan played real well,"" Macy said. ""She stopped a couple two-on-ones and stepped up big when she needed to.""
The Badgers did their best in trying to shut out the Huskies by the same score Saturday, but came up short by one goal.
The Huskies held the Badgers in the first period as the teams remained scoreless through the first 20 minutes.
The score remained tied at zero midway through the second period, but Wisconsin scored two goals before the buzzer sounded. That was all the scoring the Badgers would need, but they tacked on five more in the third period to skate away with the win.
The lone Husky goal came on a five-on-three opportunity late in the third period.
Newell, while giving up seven goals again, made 30 saves for a weekend total of 73.
In net for the Badgers Saturday, sophomore goalie Christine Dufour made 23 saves, improving her record to 3-1 on the season.
The Badgers now head on the road for the next three weekends, with their next home series coming in the first weekend in December when they will take on the defending national champion Minnesota Gophers. They begin their stretch on the road with a series at Minnesota-Duluth next weekend.
