The Wisconsin Union Theater was the site of an intense Congressional debate between U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin, D-Madison, and Republican challenger Dave Magnum. The candidates battled over topics ranging from health care and the Iraq war to tuition and the environment.
Magnum criticized Baldwin for spending too much time in Washington, despite the presence of a Baldwin-friendly crowd.
\To me, being in Congress is more than just waiting for someone to tell you it's time to vote in 30 minutes; it's about rallying people to ideas,"" Magnum said.
Throughout the debate, Magnum struggled to separate himself from the incumbent amidst a crowd that yelled and hissed whenever he repeatedly mentioned his business experience or his two sons. Out of a necessity to gain a foothold, Magnum was forced to rely on harsh attacks and a continual plea to not look at every issue through partisan divisions.
Baldwin stated she was proud of her voting record and her accomplishments in health care and economic development. She also stressed it is critical for people to get involved in this election.
""I believe that the most crucial skill and qualities of a good and effective representative are good listening skills, and inspiring and involving citizens in their government,"" Baldwin said.
Students from both sides of the political spectrum were on hand to support their favorite candidate.
""The most important issue to me is bringing something back to the state of Wisconsin. I feel Dave Magnum hammered his point home better,"" said UW-Madison sophomore Matt Wittig.
UW-Madison senior Ben Winitk disagreed, saying Baldwin was more open with her answers.
""[Baldwin] has been a strong representative in Washington and strong leader on many issues that many people in this congressional district care about,"" Winitk said.
