No dice Clarett, Williams

Former Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett's bid to join the 2004 NFL draft was denied on appeal Monday leaving only the possibility of entering a supplemental draft.

In support of the league's current policy preventing players from entering the pros until at least three years removed from high school, a federal appeals court turned down Clarett and in turn USC wide receiver Mike Williams and other underclassmen who were previously granted permission to enter this weekend's draft.

While the court will continue to review Clarett's case and will not issue its final opinion for several weeks, the ex-Buckeye running back's sole remaining chance to play in the NFL this season lies with a supplemental draft. In past seasons, such drafts have allowed players such as quarterback Bernie Kosar and wide receiver Cris Carter to still be drafted despite entering late.

Boston Marathon

A pair of Kenyans dominated the 2004 Boston Marathon Monday. Catherine Ndereba won the race for the third time on the women's side and Timothy Cherigat won on the men's side, marking the 13th time in the last 14 years that a Kenyan man has won the race.

In very hot and uncomfortable running conditions, Ndereba finished the race in 2 hours, 24 minutes, 27 seconds and just 16 seconds ahead of second place. The slim margin of victory tied the closest in the history of the women's race.

Cherigat won the men's race in 2:10:37. With his winning margin of 1:12, Cherigat led a strong field of his countrymen, as Kenyan men took the top four spots and six of the first seven.
