Badger Bits

The No. 52 UW women's tennis team (5-3 Big Ten, 12-9 overall) was flawless at home, defeating No. 63 Ohio State 7-0 Saturday and Penn State 6-1 Sunday.

UW's only slip-up against Ohio State (3-5, 8-12 overall) came when UW's No. 38 doubles pair of sophomore Katie McGaffigan and junior Lindsay Martin was upset by the Buckeyes' seniors Lindsay Williams and Meaghan Colville.

The Badgers continued their victorious weekend Sunday versus Penn State (0-8, 6-14 overall). UW swept all doubles matches to earn the doubles point and then won five of six singles matches-Martin being the only casualty-to earn its second win of the weekend.

The UW men's rowing team successfully defended its W Cup title this weekend at Washington.

Wisconsin and Washington were equally matched heading into the race and it showed. Both ranked fifth nationally, the two teams raced a close 2,000 meters with Wisconsin coming out on top by a mere two-and-a-half seconds.

It was UW's first W Cup victory away from home and its second straight victory after being defeated in its first 10 attempts for the title.

The openweight women's rowing team continued its success this weekend taking on Iowa, Indiana and Ohio State.

The No. 13 Badgers defeated Iowa and Indiana Saturday before returning to the water in the afternoon. There, they again beat Iowa. The team fell to Ohio State; however, that race may have been the most important of the weekend.

With the Big Ten Champion-ships two weeks away, UW raced strong against No. 1 Ohio State, but lost by a boatlength.

Senior Matt Tegenkamp led the UW men's track team this weekend at the Mt. SAC Relays, setting a university record in the 5,000 meters. Tegenkamp beat the UW record by more than six seconds, running 13:30.90 and finishing tenth in a race that featured some of the nation's best. For the UW women, sophomore Melissa Talbot finished second in the long jump at 19-4 with teammates Christina Taylor and Erica Schoeller finishing third and fifth respectively.
