In an effort to curb the spread of chronic wasting disease in Wisconsin, wildlife experts and the Department of Natural Resources are brainstorming ways to increase the amount of deer killed in CWD-affected areas, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
DNR officials initially wanted to kill all the deer in the 400-square-mile affected area, but recent population estimates show only a 20 percent decrease in populations in the heart of the area.
Part of this problem stems from the fact that the affected area has grown to 964 square miles.
DNR wildlife biologist Vander Zouwen told the State Journal the longer it takes to thin the herd, the greater the chances the disease will spread. He added the DNR is trying to implement incentives for hunters to hunt in disease-affected areas, including contests with prizes.
