Students at public universities have the right to free speech in student publications, according to a ruling made by a federal appeals court Thursday.
The ruling was the result of a suit filed by editors of The Innovator at Governor's State University in Illinois who disagreed with their dean of students' decision to censor the newspaper before publication. In her defense, Governor's State Dean of Students Patricia Carter cited the Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier decision that allows administrators in high schools to restrict first amendment rights in student publications. The court decided this limitation does not apply to college students.
The UW Board of Regents lost its longest-standing member Friday when Jonathan Barry resigned from his position after 12 years of service.
Barry finishes his term as president on the technical college board May 1, at which point he will no longer be able to represent the Wisconsin Technical College System on the UW Board of Regents. Anticipating his term as a regent coming to an end, Barry resigned, lamenting the current budget crisis he leaves behind.
