Students supporting an opt-out system for segregated fees submitted a petition for the proposal to be placed on the spring Associated Students of Madison ballot to ASM Student Judiciary officials March 14.
In order to be placed on the ballot the petition needed to be signed by 3,884 UW-Madison students. ASM Representative Jackie Helmrick, who helped organize the effort, said 4,085 signatures were submitted.
\We have to wait for the Student Judiciary to approve them all,"" Helmrick said.
Helmrick said the system would make student organizations accountable to students. Those opposed to the opt-out system say it allows for students to make ill-informed decisions about funding groups that may benefit them even if they are not directly involved with the organization.
ASM elections will be April 7 to 10.
The Declaration of Independence will be on display for public viewing in east wing of the state Capitol Wednesday and Thursday this week.
