UW stars in trouble off field

Anthony Davis, a UW-Madison sophomore running back, was stabbed in the left thigh early Sunday morning during a domestic dispute. This came two days after Lee Evans, a senior wide receiver who is on the injured list this season, was arrested on a misdemeanor marijuana possession in the village of Ridgeway, Wis.

Madison police responded to a domestic dispute call at Davis' Lake Street apartment shortly after 5 a.m. Sunday and found Davis with a deep puncture wound in his left thigh. Authorities charged Tiffany L. Spears, 22, of Madison with second-degree reckless endangerment. Davis was taken to UW Hospital for treatment and observation.

\I was notified about this incident Sunday morning,"" UW football Head Coach Barry Alvarez said in a statement. ""I have spoken with Anthony. My concern right now is for his health. I don't know whether or not he will play against Illinois on Saturday. As for the altercation, we are in a position of waiting until the incident has been investigated.""

Evans was charged Friday night in Iowa County after the car he was driving was pulled over in a routine traffic stop, in which Evans was cited for speeding. According to a Wisconsin State Journal report, Evans was taken into custody before posting a $100 bond and leaving the jail at approximately 10 p.m.

""Lee has been a model citizen for us in our program for four years, we've not had a bit of problem with him,"" Alvarez said during his press conference after UW's 20-3 loss to Iowa Saturday. ""We will let the legal system run its course, and I have no further comments on it and neither will my team.""

UW Assistant Athletics Director Steve Malchow said he had no further comment on either case Sunday.

""Those are our statements,"" Malchow said, referring to Alvarez's post-game comments and the press release. ""That's why we issued the release.""

UW-Madison senior Ben Walker said he was surprised to hear about both occurrences, especially Evans' arrest.

""I guess you could say that I'm shocked about it,"" he said. ""It's always a shame to hear about players who are highly respected as athletes whose moral character occasionally comes into question.\
