Civic activist Barbara Lawton of Green Bay won the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor with 55 percent of the vote to 45 percent for state Sen. Kevin Shibilski, D-Stevens Point. She joins the Doyle ticket against Republican incumbent Gov. Scott McCallum and Lt. Gov. Margaret Farrow.
Lawton, who ran for the position in the 1998 election, initially entered the race partially in response to Shibilski siding with Republicans in a Joint Finance Committee vote. Before announcing her candidacy, Lawton endorsed Tom Barrett for governor, but recanted after beginning her own campaign.
