House farm bill overturns '96 law

The U.S. House of Representatives approved a farm bill Thursday that will allocate billions of dollars to Midwestern states, including Wisconsin, and to Southern states.

The bill, which increases subsidies by 70 percent, is a reversal of the Freedom of Farm law of 1996 that was passed to wean farmers from government funding.

It will go to the Senate next week, where it is expected to pass before making its way to President Bush. If passed, the bill will allow the government to spend $180 billion over the next 10 years'an increase of $73.5 billion.
