A former director of the University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center, Dr. Paul Carbone, died unexpectedly Friday at the age of 70, apparently due to a heart attack.
Carbone had been in Singapore since December assisting in the development of a comprehensive cancer program for the National University of Singapore.
Carbone came to UW-Madison in 1976. His positions included head of clinical oncology, chair of the Department of Human Oncology from 1977 to 1987 and the second director of the UW Cancer Center from 1978 to 1997.
Carbone also received national recognition for his work in the development of breast cancer treatment, new chemotherapy drugs and the treatment and cure of Hodgkin's disease.
He played an important role in establishing UW-Madison's Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention and the university's designation as a site for the federally funded Women's Health Initiative.
After retiring, Carbone was an emeritus director of the Cancer Center and an associate dean for the university's Medical School HealthStar campaign.
