By simplifying the UW-Madison parking equation and increasing accessibility to Madison buses, university administrators hope to improve after-hours parking convenience for students and faculty members with Monday's approval by the campus transportation committee.
Beginning next fall, campus transportation services will begin offering park-and-ride programs in cooperation with Madison Metro, in which participants can park at a bus stop and catch the bus to the university. In addition, discounted bus passes will be available to faculty and staff members.
In a statement, Mike Lovejoy, interim director of Transportation Services for the university, credited the loss of \about 1,000 spaces over the next five years"" for the alternative transportation and parking plans.
In attempts to simplify parking for UW drivers, the university is also planning to cut down the number of parking rate categories from seven to three, with prices ranging from $450 to $990.
