Norquist complaints similar to New Yorkers'
Eric Tempelis claimed he has recently been to New York City and Washington, D.C., and that \in neither of these cities... was a selfish, whining word uttered""'an amusingly and transparently false assertion (""Norquist's complaining unacceptable today,"" Feb. 5). Incessant kvetching has always been a much-loved and vigorous hobby for New Yorkers of all nationalities. While I saw some changes in New York City during my own recent trip to my former home, I am pleased to say that the disappearance of dissent was not one of them. It would be tragic if the city's spirit had been so dampened that New Yorkers had become mindless obedient servants to their political ""leaders."" And yet, this is what Mr. Tempelis wants for us here in Wisconsin. He fails to address the substantive issues of how the budget cuts would be applied and whom they would affect. Instead he resorts to self-righteous grandstanding that is completely free of fact, logic or argument. This is an all-too-common practice in the last few months, and I for one am getting tired of being told that the most desirable, most noble and most loyal qualities in a citizen are those that do not differentiate him from a doormat.
