Black, Pocan admirably fighting for financial aid
Although I am graduating, it is a relief to know there are people in the state Assembly supporting the students. I commend Reps. Spencer Black, D-Madison, assembly minority leader, and Mark Pocan, D-Madison, for giving much-needed publicity and support to students' issues, most notably financial aid.
The statistics are there; as the UW System increases its tuition, it will continue to lose talented and otherwise capable potential students. The out-of-state situation is way out of hand (raised more than $2,000 since the 1998-'99 year) and sadly the aid is just not present to help students of modest financial means.
The United Council has been on our side for a while, but together with Black and Pocan, maybe something can be done for the future students of the UW System. As an out-of-state student, I want to be able to recommend this fine university to friends who are not just wealthy.
