The Daily Cardinal spoke with representatives from College Democrats and College Republicans about Tuesday's State of the Union Address.
Steven Singh is a sophomore and the treasurer of the College Democrats.
In general, what did you think?
I thought in general it was a pretty good speech in terms of the things he focused on. ... The one thing I think he left out was campaign finance.
Were you happy with the Democratic response?
I was. ... Bipartisanship doesn't necessarily mean we have to agree with everything he has to say.
In general, do you think he was thorough and detailed enough?
I think he was but I think a lot of it depends on how much you read between the lines.
What do you think of Bush in general?
I think that although he's doing a great job on the war he really needs to change the way he focuses his domestic policy otherwise we're going to end up in a country that's back in debt with a very poorly maintained environment.
Susan Strzelec is a senior and the chairman of the College Republicans.
In general, what did you think of the speech?
I was actually really impressed. ... He really did a great job of making sure Americans remember that its all about unity right now.
What did you think of the Democratic response?
I thought that it was a slightly harsh response but I guess that's just one of those things that occurs.
Have your opinions of Bush changed for the better or worse recently?
I think, due to the Sept. 11 attacks, having a republican president is very important because the republicans do stand for things like stronger military. ... In all, I really think that him being the president at a time like this, I rest easier knowing that he's there and I think that a lot of the nation has turned their heads and seen that he's doing a phenomenal job in a time of tragedy.
