Cereal Crops research unit receives U.S. grant

A $3 million allocation for construction of a new UW-Madison Agricultural Research Service Cereal Crops Research Unit laboratory, as part of an Agriculture, Rural Development, FDA and Related Agencies appropriations bill for the 2002-'03 fiscal year, was passed by the House of Representatives Wednesday.

U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin, D-Madison, sat on the committee.

The Cereal Crops Research Unit is the only national facility devoted to barley and oat quality research.

Dr. David Peterson, UW-Madison research leader of the Cereal Crops Research Unit, said the work improves the nutritional value of oats and barley along with benefiting malting and brewing industries.

The new facilities will replace a more than 50-year-old building.
