Amazon.com announces cut of 1,300 employees

Leading Internet retailer Amazon.com announced Tuesday it was reducing its workforce by 1,300 employees in an effort to meet financial goals.

According to The Washington Post, company officials said the cuts--about 15 percent of the company workforce--would come from closing one of the firm's customer service centers in Seattle and a year-old distribution center in Georgia.

Financial reports released Tuesday showed Amazon.com lost $545 million in the three-month period ending Dec. 31, 2000, compared to a loss of $323.3 million over the same quarter in 1999. Profits for the period fell $28 million short of expectations.
