A bit of Vegas in Madison

Students with a yen for gambling can save their money and a trip to Ho-Chunk this weekend at Casino Night, sponsored by Students Orienting Students (SOS). The event is part of Spring Wisconsin Welcome, the January version of the fall events to welcome new and returning students to campus.

\It's going to be a good place to meet people, to have fun ... it's an alternative activity to going out on the weekends,"" said Carren Martin, coordinator of Student Orientation and Development for Campus Information, Assistance and Orientation.

Games available at the event will include blackjack, craps and roulette. Participants will wager with chips issued at the door, which they will be able to exchange for raffle tickets at the end of the evening. The prizes for the raffle are mainly donations from area businesses.

According to Martin, a team of approximately fifteen SOS guides helped plan this event. Senior Nicholas Kartos, a member of this group, said one of the factors leading to the decision to run this event was its novelty.

""We wanted to have a fun activity, but we also wanted it to be something that students might not see too often,"" he said.

Another event planner, senior Shannon Boden, agreed.

""It's cool because it's a free event that everyone can go to, and it's something different that's not usually going on on campus,"" she said.

Even though the event is new, the organizers have high hopes for it.

""We've never done this kind of event before, but given our attendance at past events, we expect two hundred to three hundred students,"" Martin said.
