Facebook gives incoming students a connection to campus

In preparation for the fall semester, first-year students are using Facebook to help them facilitate new relationships and learn about the UW-Madison campus.

Each year, the Office of Admissions and Recruitment creates and administers an official Facebook group for incoming freshmen and transfer students. There are also a variety of unofficial Facebook groups that are run by students this year, including UW-Madison Class of 2022-Party and Events and UW-Madison Class of 2022-Girls Group.

The official Facebook group run by UW-Madison, UW-Madison Official Class of 2022, currently garners the most attention with over 4,500 members.

Kara Zavada, the communication specialist in the Office of Admissions and Recruitment said the Facebook page is provided to students as a resource to help them with their transition to living on campus.

“The purpose is so incoming students can get to know each other, find roommates, network, get updates on campus events and ask questions of both fellow students and representatives from the university,” Zavada said.

Tambre Hu, a member of the UW-Madison Official Class of 2022 Facebook group, said she joined the page to get to know her fellow students.

“I don’t know any other people going to UW-Madison, so I was hoping to meet some people and have a place that I could ask any potential questions,” Hu said.

Although a majority of the posts on the official UW-Madison Facebook page consist of people looking for roommates, Hu said she is not just looking for someone to live with but wants to learn more about her classmates.

“I’ve messaged a few people and talked, but not for the sake of becoming roommates,” Hu said. “I’m hoping to meet more people with a similar major.”

Jadyn Syverson is a member of the UW-Madison Class of 2022-Party and Events Facebook group but not the official UW-Madison group. Syverson said she wants to have as much communication with other students as possible, and being a member of a student-run Facebook group is the best way to do that.

Unlike student-run Facebook pages, Zavada said the UW-Madison Official Class of 2022 Facebook group will be made inactive after the class’s first academic year, making the page unavailable to students.

Once on campus in the fall though, students will still be able to access the UW-Madison Official Class of 2022 Facebook group. They can also visit the Center for the First-Year Experience with any questions about campus.
