No. 1 Badgers face first tough test of the season against No. 3 Minnesota-Duluth

Through 12 games and almost two months, No. 1 Wisconsin (9-0-1 WCHA, 11-0-1 overall) has proven itself as the clear best team in women’s collegiate hockey this season, holding the top spot in every USCHO.com poll and collecting every first place vote in all but three of them. The only piece missing from the Badgers’ résumé is a win against another top team, the squads that Wisconsin will have to beat to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament.

Badgers fall short in first game in Tsipis era

The Badgers’ season, and the Jonathan Tsipis era, did not start as they hoped it would. After two solid showings at the Kohl Center in exhibition matches, the team traveled east to take on the University of Charlotte for the season opener this past Friday. The Badgers lost to the Conference USA team 63-48.

Cross Country: Wisconsin men capture regional title, women finish third, both qualify for NCAA Championship meet

Throughout his career as a Badger, senior Malachy Schrobilgen had amassed numerous individual accolades—three-time All-American, three-time Big Ten champion, two-time Big Ten Cross Country Men’s Athlete of the Year—but a win at the Great Lakes regional had escaped him in his first three tries. Ironically, Schrobilgen was one of the last to know that he had finally captured that elusive victory at Friday’s regional championships, as he assumed that teammate Morgan McDonald had crossed the line first until informed by a member of the media shortly before an interview.

Clifton shines in Big Ten-Team USA meet

When the event lists were released for the USA College Challenge, it was surprising to see senior Cannon Clifton in only one event, the 100-yard freestyle. But swimming in just the one event proved to be an advantage for Clifton this weekend, as he showed his speed en route to a third-place individual finish and a game-changing split on the Big Ten’s winning 400-yard freestyle relay. Saturday in individual competition, Clifton swam a 43.62, which ranks ninth in the nation.

Turnovers fuel No. 7 Badgers in rout of Fighting Illini

For the first five and a half minutes of the game, the Illinois Fighting Illini (2-5 Big Ten, 3-7 overall) were right in it against the No. 7 Wisconsin Badgers (5-2, 8-2). Then UW scored touchdowns on four-straight drives and cruised to a 48-3 win on homecoming night. The game was more-or-less decided by halftime as Wisconsin went to the locker room with a 31-3 lead.

Badgers to be well-represented at USA College Challenge

The rosters for the USA College Challenge November 12 and 13 were released last week, and it’s safe to say the Badgers will be well-represented, with three men and three women selected to represent the Big Ten in Indianapolis this weekend. The USA College Challenge is a two-day swim meet that pits the top swimmers in one of the major college conferences—this year, the Big Ten—against members of the U.S.

Trice, bench propel Badgers to season-opening blowout of Central Arkansas

The No. 9 Wisconsin Badgers (1-0) might have returned 99.7 percent of their scoring from last season, but in a 79-47 victory Friday night it was youth, not experience, that helped jump start UW’s offense and overpower Central Arkansas (0-1). Leading by just two points with a little over seven minutes to go in the first half, sophomore forward Charles Thomas spun baseline off the right block and found senior guard Bronson Koenig wide open for a 3-pointer in the left corner.

Lavelle leads Badgers to upset win in NCAA Tournament

Rose Lavelle proved to everyone at the McClimon Complex why she is the No.1 player in the country, as she led Wisconsin (9-8-4) to a 1-0 victory over Marquette (12-2-8) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Lavelle scored the lone goal in the 30th minute for the Badgers with a bomb off the edge of the 18-yard box that beat Marquette goaltender Maddy Henry at the far post.

Hayes, Koenig lead Badgers in blowout opener of Central Arkansas

After a sluggish start in their first regular season game, the No. 9 Wisconsin Badgers (1-0), thanks in large part to their bench, cruised by Central Arkansas (0-1) 79-47. The Badgers jumped out to an early 13-3 lead, but a lull in the middle of the first half cut the lead to two points with just over seven minutes to play in the period. An assist from sophomore forward Charles Thomas to senior guard Bronson Koenig, though, extended the lead to five and back-to-back three pointers from freshman guard D’Mitrik Trice three minutes later helped extend the Badgers’ lead to double digits.
