As an incoming freshman or transfer student, the new surroundings of UW-Madison and the city surrounding it can be a tad intimidating, if only because they're new. Every day you'll see a rash of names of the front page of the paper of various government officials, university administrators and other notable figures and organizations, but it takes some time to understand who they all are and what it is they do. To make things easier, The Daily Cardinal has created a cheat sheet covering most of news makers you will see throughout the pages of our paper in the coming year.
I remember my first Badger game quite well — on Aug. 30, 2008, the Badgers took the field at Camp Randall Stadium and trounced Akron 38-17 while I watched from section P in the north end zone. Obviously, I knew every single cheer, belted out the lyrics to all of the songs the PA system played, had every student section chants memorized and flawlessly executed the Time Warp dance during the Fifth Quarter.
Change was imminent this offseason for men's hockey head coach Mike Eaves, who had seven seniors graduate from a team that played in the national title game and lost two more underclassmen (so far) who decided to forgo a year of eligibility and sign professional contracts.
Students new to the sports scene on campus in Madison will come to know Barry Alvarez as a guy who, in his role as Athletic Director, should fire this coach or that coach and push ahead plans to improve athletic facilities. He is more recognizable, though, as the football coach that helmed the Badgers during their return to respectability through the 1990s and into this decade.

One year ago, the Wisconsin football team entered the fall as a damaged product. The team underachieved in 2008, head coach Bret Bielema appeared to be on the hot seat, and many expected another lackluster year. What a difference 10 wins can make.
I remember exactly what kind of kid I was before coming to college. Thoughts of parties, beer and women constantly floated through my head in the days leading up to move-in. Picture a young Van Wilder, but paler. Back then, I was a mere 120 lbs of lean, mean partying potential.
Downtown Madison businesses have to cope with economic consequences when UW-Madison students leave during the summer months, but city events and tourism may help account for losses.

Although UW-Madison's Faculty Senate passed a plan to restructure the graduate school Monday, several research groups are concerned the proposal will create a gulf between research policy and management on campus.
UW-Madison student Ellie Kahn and her roommates knew they had a problem when they found bedbugs in their downtown apartment. They moved out claiming the apartment was untenantable. They now face a bigger problem. Tenants are not protected under state statute or city ordinance for pest-control problems unless they can prove the infestation is a severe health hazard.

Over the past few years, we've seen a strange trend developing in the NHL playoffs, and I've never been quite sure how to explain it, but I'm going to take a stab. Every single year in the NFL playoffs, you can count on some of the teams that had the best record in the regular season to drop out of the playoffs way too early. Based on the regular season standings, the best teamsnever seem to take it deep into the playoffs, and each year it seems to get stranger.
The Wisconsin Student Public Interest Group held a press conference Tuesday to announce Madison's status as a Fair Trade City, making it the 16th city in the nation and the first state capital to receive this designation.
