At a Board of Regents meeting held at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Thursday, representatives discussed the controversy surrounding the UW System’s $648 million budget surplus, which many called a “teachable moment” in respect to the way the board communicates about finances with legislators and Wisconsin citizens.

Joint Finance Committee passes controversial health care, education motions in last budget session

The Joint Finance Committee concluded its consideration of the state’s biennial budget in a session that stretched from Tuesday into early Wednesday morning and included committee approvals for some of the most controversial budgetary motions, including those pertaining to declining federal Medicaid expansion money and the full expansion of a private school voucher program.

State finance committee votes investigative journalism organization off UW campus

Wisconsin’s state finance committee voted early Wednesday in favor of ejecting an independent, non-profit investigative journalism organization from its current home on University of Wisconsin-Madison’s campus, a decision UW-Madison School of Journalism and Mass Communication Director Greg Downey said infringes on innovative professional research and academic freedom.

UW-Madison drops lawsuit against adidas

UPDATE: 6/04/13 7:00 p.m. The University of Wisconsin-Madison dropped its lawsuit against adidas Monday, in which the university sought to determine if the apparel company had violated its contract with UW-Madison, following a settlement between the apparel company and a union of former workers.

Dalai Lama promotes individual well-being as a source of global health

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, spoke at the Overture Center for the Arts during part of his two-day visit to Madison. The Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at the Waisman Center along with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Global Health Institute sponsored the Dalai Lama’s Overture panel as a part of the Change Your Mind, Change The World tour, focused on a message that people’s minds can be trained just like muscles.
