Madison Police Department officers responded to reports of shots being fired on the 2700 block of McDivitt Drive Wednesday morning that resulted in at least one man being shot. Team One Love UW-Madison held its first “Escalation” workshop to raise awareness on the warning signs of abusive relationships Tuesday in the UW-Madison Social Sciences building. The workshop screened a 45-minute video on the escalation of violence in an abusive relationship, followed by a small group break-out session to discuss different forms of abuse, self-help strategies and how to assist those involved in an abusive relationship. The national One Love Foundation was founded in 2010 in honor of Yeardley Love, who was beaten to death by her boyfriend one week before she graduated from the University of Virginia. UW-Madison Team One Love President Maiya Weber said the main goal of the workshop is to inform students on the topic of abuse and resources available to them on campus. “Hopefully the workshops make college kids more aware of what’s happening because they are the most vulnerable group for relationship abuse,” Weber said.

Amid record levels of student debt in Wisconsin, Gov. Scott Walker announced Tuesday alterations to UW Credit Union’s membership eligibility, with the intention of providing a greater level of access to loan refinancing opportunities for students of the state. Walker announced the changes at a press conference in Madison and was joined by officials of both the credit union and the Department of Financial Institutions, the relevant state regulatory agency, when announcing the alterations. Under the previous criteria, UW Credit Union membership was offered exclusively to students and alumni of the UW System.
The Associated Students of Madison Legislative Affairs Committee discussed possible action the group could take regarding tuition transparency at its meeting Monday. Mara Matovitch, ASM’s shared governance campaign director, explained that the tuition transparency campaign will seek to clarify procedures surrounding the General 101 Fund, which includes tuition money from each UW System school, as well as state tax dollars allocated to the UW System. Under current policy, tuition dollars are not distinguishable from General Program Revenue, or state-funded dollars, in the 101 Fund.

Rouse, who served as dean of students from 1987 to 2000 as well as director of the Morgridge Center for Public Service, said in the letter the decision to lease space to Amazon “seems short sighted and ill conceived.”
