SSFC Spotlight: Committee approves Muslim Student Association’s eligibility

The Associated Students of Madison Student Services Finance Committee unanimously approved the 2016-’17 eligibility application for GSSF funding of the Muslim Student Association at its meeting Monday. The MSA attempts to “provide a strong sense of community and family for MSA members on campus,” according to MSA President Najeeha Khan. While MSA is a religious student organization based on Islamic principles, not all of their members are religious.

Committee to discuss retail impact study Thursday

Over the past couple months, the Downtown Coordinating Committee along with Tangible Consulting Services, a Minneapolis company specializing in “services to advance public goals and high-quality development,” has been studying ways to improve retail in downtown Madison.

Rainbow Bookstore faces potential closing after more than 25 years

After more than 25 years in Madison, the Rainbow Bookstore Cooperative is in danger of closing due to financial troubles. “We are in the process of having meetings to come together and determine what we want to do as a store and as a cooperative,” said Elizabeth Severson, a Rainbow Bookstore Cooperative volunteer. Although the store is scheduled to remain open through the end of September, its future beyond that point is uncertain.

Majority Speaker Rep. Robin Vos, R-Rochester, sent a letter to Evers “respectfully demanding” he change the special election date of former U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy’s Congressional seat.

Republican legislator continues push for more conservative speakers on campus

State Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, continued to emphasize the need for the UW System to bring more conservative speakers to its campuses in an interview on WISN Sunday. Vos says he has gotten some pushback from liberals, but thinks there is an overall consensus on the issue. “I think by and large most people recognize that we have a problem in higher education with trying to foster ideas on both sides of the aisle,” Vos said in the interview.

Police Chief and Urban League of Greater Madison CEO talk community relations

Madison Police Department Chief Mike Koval and Urban League of Greater Madison President and CEO Dr. Ruben Anthony discussed police-community relations Thursday night before the Madison Police Department Policy and Procedure Review Ad Hoc Committee. Both communities answered five pre-determined questions from the committee on improving policing policy in Madison and how they thought it could be improved.

Walker denies wrongdoing after campaign finance records dump

Gov. Scott Walker dodged questions on his campaign finance record Thursday at a press conference, following the release of documents shedding light on his activities during the 2011 recall election. The question was raised following the release of 1,500 documents by The Guardian Wednesday which include evidence toward alleged campaign finance violations in a case against Walker beginning in 2012.

Students, faculty kick off year-long partnership with city of Monona

UW-Madison kicked off a new program aiming to connect the campus community with the needs of cities in Wisconsin with a meeting Wednesday night at the Leopold Nature Center in Monona. The city of Monona, which borders Madison, will serve as the pilot location for the “UniverCity” initiative, in which faculty, staff and students from UW-Madison will work with the city on projects in areas such as parks and recreation, transportation, housing and economic development. The year-long program is part of the UniverCity Alliance, a coalition of various institutions on campus focused on urban sustainability.
