Chappell’s early surge helps Badgers bury Pepperdine

The University of Wisconsin men's basketball team (5-1) continued to show they possess a variety of scoring options, as it seems that every game a new player steps up with a breakout performance. This Saturday it was junior forward Jason Chappell, who shot his way into the spotlight and made his presence felt early and often during the Badgers 71-55 victory over Pepperdine at the Kohl Center Saturday.

New Sundance theater should make Madison a film buff’s dream

When I was a freshman just getting situated in the dorms, the first thing I did was hop a bus to the nearest art theater. I went to high school in the dinky town of Hurley, Wis., which itself doesn't even have a movie theater or video store. If you cross the Michigan border into Ironwood, you'll find only a Family Video (where I worked, of course) and a rather pitiful little four-screen multiplex (which I also briefly worked at) with a penchant for getting only the most mainstream movies. Sooner or later most Oscar contenders would come to us, but most of the time, if you didn't want to see 'Harry Potter' or the latest Julia Roberts movie, you'd be out of luck. So when I came to Madison, I was as excited about the Hilldale Theatre and Westgate Art Cinemas as I was about college girls and beer.

Pel’meni closes, will reopen in January under new ownership

Pel'meni, 505 State St., closed its doors last night at 9 p.m. after serving a packed crowd their last helpings of the restaurant's popular beef-and-potato dumplings. The restaurant will be closed until early January 2006, when it reopens under new ownership. Pel'meni was subject to an ownership battle the last year and a half between Madison owner Paul Schwoerer and the owner of the original Alaskan Pel'meni. The Alaskan owner accused Schwoerer of stealing from him, and Schwoerer discovered he was not included on the restaurant's ownership agreement. The Alaskan owner filed a lawsuit against Schwoerer, and the two were locked in a battle for control of the restaurant. Pel'meni employees encourage patrons to eat elsewhere, in protest of the new ownership, when the restaurant reopens early next year.

Students need Magnum’s common sense in Congress

Who's representing us in Congress? Currently, those of us who live in the 2nd District are 'represented' by Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin. Baldwin, a progressive Democrat, may be the embodiment of the Isthmus crew with her plans for nationalized health care and tax increases. However, she does not stand for the families, businesses and people living in the district who have a modicum of common sense. Fortunately, Dave Magnum has decided to run again in the 2nd District to provide an alternative to Baldwin. Magnum ran against Baldwin in 2004 and was, in a word, 'trounced.'
