Common Council delays Soglin panhandling amendment

The city of Madison Common Council unanimously voted to delay discussion of a motion intended to curb roadside panhandling put forth by Mayor Paul Soglin Tuesday. Madison suspended enforcement of its General Ordinances regarding panhandling in January after the American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin sent a letter to city attorney Michael May, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.

Man shot near Memorial Union

A man was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen near Memorial Union early Sunday morning. The man, whom Madison Police are not identifying at this time, was at an outdoor party on the 600 block of Mendota Court.

Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne will not charge Genele Laird or the officers involved in the June incident.

Genele Laird, an 18-year-old black woman whose forcible arrest by Madison Police Department officers Tuesday was captured on a video that quickly went viral, will enter into a restorative justice program, Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne said during a press conference Friday.

Madison Police Department is investigating the fifth murder of 2016 and Chief Mike Koval said it relates to the third.

Poor weather keeps Mifflin turnout relatively low

No serious issues were reported throughout Saturday during the wet and muddy 2016 Mifflin Street Block Party, according to the Madison Police Department Public Information Officer Joel DeSpain. DeSpain estimated about 3,500 people attended the event at any one point Saturday.

William Flowers, 25, Billy Richmond, 35, and Travis Smith Jr., 28, are wanted for unrelated charges, but may have information about the homicide, according to MPD.

Koval presses to find suspects 10 days after Moore homicide

Madison Police Department Chief Mike Koval held a press conference Friday in an attempt to find more information in relation to last week’s homicide outside of O’Grady’s Irish Pub. Koval said Martez Moore’s funeral was also Friday, ten days after he was murdered.

Dane County Executive Joe Parisi highlights Denim Day

Dane County Executive Joe Parisi and Rape Crisis Center Executive Director Erin Thornley Parisi held a press conference Wednesday in the City County Building to highlight Denim Day, which is meant to bring awareness to Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Denim Day first occurred in April 1999, according to the Denim Day website. The movement started after an 18-year-old Italian woman accused her driver’s education instructor of driving her to a remote road, forcing her out of the car and raping her. The case made it to the Italian Supreme Court, which ruled the sex must have been consensual because her jeans were so tight she must have helped take them off.

The Madison Police Department is preparing to police the annual Mifflin Street Block Party this Saturday.
