Neurobiology course encourages students to look at science through an artistic, feminist lens

Sectioned into weekly topics on neurological anatomy, functions and mental health processes, the course encourages students to take notes, complete homework and interact with peers through an artistic lens. This includes drawing and sketching course material in a series of composition notebooks, according to the class syllabus.

UW-Madison student organization and national foundation, One Love, presented the film, Escalation, and a panel discussion to engage the campus community in conversations about domestic violence.

Man arrested after attacking pedestrians near Slichter Residence Hall

UWPD officers responded to a call for help around 5:45 p.m. and located the man near Slichter Residence Hall. The alleged attacker, identified as Isaac M. Ziegler, has no affiliation with UW-Madison, according to UWPD Director of Communications Marc Lovicott.

Black Cultural Center will open to ‘celebrate’ end of semester

In the aftermath of President Donald Trump’s rollout of a controversial executive order barring immigration from seven majority-Muslim countries, many questioned whether it was consistent with American values of acceptance and diversity.

Manya Whitaker connected current activism on college campuses to that of the Civil Rights era, and encouraged teaching faculty to use these movements in their instruction.

Speaker stresses importance of ‘lived experience’ in classrooms

Whitaker, an assistant professor at Colorado College, said—in her lecture titled “Teaching to and through Social Justice”—she realized early in her teaching career that the experiences her students had outside of the classroom greatly impacted the manner in which they absorbed new information.

Five expert panelists contradicted the term “Islamophobia” by defining it and explaining it’s history, while also discussing strategies to combat the effects of bias Muslims face from Islamophobes.

A UW-Madison student said a man touched her and attempted to kiss her at approximately 3 p.m. Monday in the business building.

UW-Madison student reports ‘unwelcome sexual advances’ in Grainger Hall

A UW-Madison student reported that a man touched and tried to kiss her without her consent in Grainger Hall Monday, according to a UW-Madison Police Department crime alert. The student said an unknown man approached her at approximately 3 p.m. and began touching her back. He then attempted to kiss her, after which she left the room and then the man eventually left the area.

Daniel Dropik, 33, who attempted to form a Madison chapter of the American Freedom Party in January, has given up trying to bring the “alt-right” organization to campus and will take a break from his studies.

Club baseball coach petitions to make baseball varsity sport

Jeff Block, head coach and one of the founding member of the club baseball team, published a petition online early this week calling on Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez to reinstate baseball as a varsity sport. After four days of being live the petition already has more than 1,000 signatures.

The practice of considering criminal records in admissions is quite common among UW-Madison’s peer institutions. Twelve out of the 13 other Big Ten schools, all but the University of Nebraska, say they receive information about applicants’ criminal histories during the admissions process.

Columbia University professor and mental health activist Andrew Solomon spoke about children with distinct traits and how they shape their identities from these qualities at his Distinguished Lecture Series talk Wednesday.

Wisconsin Union Directorate welcomed renowned writer, lecturer and activist Andrew Solomon to speak on this topic and its roots as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series Wednesday. In addition to publishing several successful novels, such as National Book Award winner “The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression,” Solomon is a professor of clinical psychology at Columbia University Medical Center and president of the Poets, Essayists and Novelists American Center.
