Arrests made in battery incident outside residence hall

UW-Madison Police Department arrested three suspects Tuesday in connection to the battery incident that occurred outside a UW-Madison residence hall last week. According to a university police report, a UW-Madison student was injured following a fight outside Sellery Hall last Friday. The fight stemmed from another confrontation earlier in the evening at a downtown bar. The victim in the battery suffered a broken wrist and a concussion as a result of the altercation, according to the report.

Battery reported outside UW-Madison residence hall

A battery reportedly involving a UW-Madison student outside a residence hall early Friday morning, according to a UW-Madison Crime Warning issued Saturday afternoon. The warning said the UW-Madison Police Department received the report Saturday and are actively investigating the incident.

According to a 1924 Badger Yearbook, members of the organization titled the “Ku Klux Klan” included actor Fredric March and longtime Memorial Union director Porter Butts, who are both memorialized with the Fredric March Play Circle and Porter Butts Gallery at the Union.

Union to cover KKK fraternity members’ names on gallery, play circle

The council will work to develop programing that confronts the campus history UW-Madison scholars have called a “pervasive culture of racial and religious bigotry.” Its plans include creating spaces to delve into racial campus history, as well as examining current social justice issues.

Dennis Prager spoke Wednesday night at an event hosted by conservative student group Young Americans for Freedom.

Controversial political commentator speaks on Judeo-Christian morality

UW-Madison students and community members gathered Wednesday in Sterling Hall to listen to conservative political commentator Dennis Prager speak on Judeo-Christian morality. During the event hosted by the Young Americans for Freedom, Prager discussed topics ranging from racism to “gender dysphoria.” Prager’s main concern in his “commencement address you won't hear from your school” was the question of how to make good people.

The group suggested the university address the struggles of underrepresented groups today but provided no answer regarding the renaming of the Fredric March Play Circle and Porter Butts Gallery at the Union — both named after members of the 1920’s “Klu Klux Klan” student group.

Students to file hate and bias report against university for KKK committee response

A group of UW-Madison students and alumni are responding to the university’s Ku Klux Klan study group decision by filing a hate and bias report. Adan Raed Abu-Hakmeh, a UW-Madison senior, announced on Facebook Tuesday her plans to file a hate and bias report against the university for its “inadequacy in renouncing the memorialization of the KKK on campus.”

Incoming students largely choosing more expensive tier meal plan, data show

The majority of first-year students living in residence halls in the upcoming semester are selecting high-tiered options in the new meal plan program unveiled by University Dining, according to documents obtained by The Daily Cardinal. A document distributed at a meeting between a dining shared governance group and University Dining officials revealed that 73.66 percent of the 4,511 students who have signed their housing contracts for the fall chose to deposit a minimum of $2,100 onto their WisCard exclusively for on-campus dining.

The graffiti was found on Agricultural Hall Monday morning.

Apparent Hebrew graffiti found scribbled on Agricultural Hall

Hebrew graffiti containing Messianic language was found spray painted on Agricultural Hall Monday morning. A translation of the writing revealed the writing says, “Long live our Lord, our Master, and our Lord, King Messiah, forever and ever.”

Members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity have denied rumors that they threw trash into Lake Mendota.

UW-Madison fraternity under fire for allegedly throwing trash into Lake Mendota on Earth Day

A Facebook post allegedly showing members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity throwing objects into Lake Mendota sparked backlash Sunday night. The video, shared by junior Laurel Noack, showed someone throwing objects into Lake Mendota from the back lawn of the SAE Fraternity.

Sunburst chairs to return to Memorial Union Terrace

It is that time of year again. The Memorial Union Terrace will celebrate the warm weather Tuesday by returning its popular sunburst chairs to their lakeside home at 4:30 p.m., the Wisconsin Union announced Monday. The Union will begin Terrace season — an almost 90-year-old tradition — by inviting UW-Madison students and community members to line up at the North Park Street entrance to the Terrace at 3:30 p.m. Each person in line will pick up a chair to take onto the Terrace, kicking off the 2018 Terrace season.

UW-Madison graduate, civil rights leader dies at 94

UW-Madison graduate and pioneering civil rights leader Vel Phillips passed away Tuesday at age 94, the university announced Wednesday. Phillips was the first black woman to earn a degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School back in 1951. She would go on to break boundaries by being the first black woman to hold a variety of respected government positions in Wisconsin, like secretary of state.

Officials hope the new enrollment application will allow students to spend less time talking with advisors about how to use the tools and more time talking about their futures.

University announces next year’s Go Big Read selection

UW-Madison selected “The Death of the Great Lakes” as the 2018-’19 Go Big Read, according to a UW-Madison press release. The book, written by two-time Pulitzer-Prize finalist and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter Dan Egan, examines the dangers facing the Great Lakes, as well as the different ways they can be restored and preserved.

The group Promoting Awareness, Victim Empowerment hosted the event.

Blogger, writer talks fighting rape culture, sexual assault in divided political climate
