After a weeklong break for the holidays, the No. 15 Wisconsin Badgers (2-0 Big Ten, 10-3 overall) traveled to Bowling Green, Kentucky for their final tilt of the calendar year against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (0-0 C-USA, 7-6 overall). With the backing of a raucous crowd, WKU exposed UW’s rust, triumphing 83-76.

Oftentimes, the singularity of a veteran player’s greatness can be easily forgotten — it can take major milestones to jolt fans from their complacency and recognize a remarkable career.

After a dispiriting letdown in the spring, the Wisconsin men’s basketball team has spent the last two months on a redemption tour. Eager to prove that last year’s failures were merely an anomaly, they have begun their redemption tour with spirited performances against marquee opponents.

Every season it seems, Wisconsin suffers several self-inflicted losses. Missing free throws, failing to convert open looks and committing needless turnovers tend to be the primary culprits. Such a performance struck Saturday at the worst possible time: on the road against in-state foe Marquette.

The long-running rivalry between Wisconsin and Marquette is ever-present in America’s Dairyland. It has caused friendships to fracture. Parents and siblings root for the younger members of the family to spurn one university or the other; sometimes they even watch, with feigned horror, as their loved ones make the “wrong” choice. People in (slightly) long-distance relationships are forced to weather the tensions that accompany these divided loyalties.

Trailing Rutgers 27-17 in the waning moments of the first half Monday, it appeared likely the No. 12 Wisconsin basketball team (2-0 Big Ten, 8-1 overall) would earn themselves a dubious distinction. The Badgers had turned the ball over five times and made zero three-pointers and were poised to become the first team since January 2008 to lose as a ranked team at home to the Scarlet Knights (0-2, 5-3 overall).

Wisconsin’s Big Ten revenge tour began in style Friday night with a 72-66 victory over Iowa on the road to begin conference play. Here are the major takeaways from the encouraging victory:

Tuesday night, the Wisconsin men’s basketball team faced a home test for the first time. To make matters more difficult, NC State (0-0 ACC, 6-1 overall) applied pressure throughout the game, daring the Badgers to make them pay. The Wolfpack seemed to have an answer for every Wisconsin run. It appeared the Badgers would succumb to the pressure.

Last season, the Badgers went to Charlottesville to take on a top-ranked Virginia team. They left having scored only 37 points in a humbling loss to the Cavaliers. This year, an improved UW team took on UVA with a chance to win the Battle 4 Atlantis, hoping for some vengeance. While the Badgers were able to break 40 points on this occasion, they return to Madison with the end result unchanged.

Wednesday’s Wisconsin-Stanford game took place in the Bahamas, but it might as well have been in the Bermuda Triangle.

Fresh off a huge road win over Xavier, Wisconsin returned home hoping to avoid a letdown against their Southland Conference opponent the Houston Baptist Huskies. From the tip, it was apparent that an upset was not in the making.

The Wisconsin men’s basketball team began the 2018-'19 campaign in style Tuesday night, winning 85-63 over Coppin State at the Kohl Center.
(11/03/18 2:50am)
The Wisconsin basketball team’s unofficial season opener Friday at the Kohl Center was their first opportunity to prove last year was an aberration. A promising but flawed performance in a 82-70 exhibition win against the UW-Oshkosh Titans showed this team is still a work in progress.

When the Wisconsin men’s basketball team took the floor for warm-ups before the “Red and White Scrimmage” Sunday, one of the first songs to play over the loudspeakers was Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.” It was an apt choice for this year’s team, one that finds itself in uncharted territory.

The 2018-2019 men’s basketball season began in earnest Sunday at the Kohl Center as the Badgers took part in the annual Red and White scrimmage. Split into two different squads, the group played three ten-minute sessions before offering autographs to those in attendance. Here are four takeaways from the first glimpse at this year’s team:

There is perhaps no better indicator of expectations and interest in a team than ticket sales. An emptier Kohl Center highlights the perception of the Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball team.

The Wisconsin football program has thrived on an underdog mentality for years. Each season, the first Associated Press poll is released, and Badgers fans are crestfallen, finding their team far lower than anticipated. In 2017, a Wisconsin team fresh off a Big Ten Championship appearance and a victory in the Cotton Bowl found itself ranked ninth. In 2016 they were unranked and in 2015 they opened at No. 20. Both of those teams had won a bowl game against marquee opponents the previous season.

Wisconsin’s wide receiver depth, viewed as a considerable strength following the group’s strong performance down the stretch in 2017, recently took a hit when starters Quintez Cephus and Danny Davis were implicated in reports of a sexual assault in the spring. In need of a boost in the passing game, the Badgers have turned to young players who otherwise may not have seen much time. In Friday’s victory over Western Kentucky, Jack Dunn was one of those players.
