The Big Ten has become a conference of parity with just one constant year in and year out: Winning on the road is extremely difficult. Whether it has to do with the rowdy hometown crowds or the friendly referees, teams just seem to play better on their home floor. The key then, to winning the conference has become to beat all the beatable teams on the road (i.e., Northwestern, Purdue and Penn State) and win all your home games. That formula has worked especially well for Wisconsin Coach Bo Ryan. His teams have gone 34-1 at the Kohl Center in his five years as coach. During that span, the Badgers have been in the title hunt every year and have won the championship twice.
Since August, the Associated Students of Madison Legislative Affairs Committee, in collaboration with the UW Budget Coalition, has been consistently and effectively organizing interns and volunteers to lobby the Joint Finance Committee, gather student support, and build partnerships with administrators. Governor Doyle's budget has called for a 14-percent increase in tuition in the next two years, elimination of hundreds of essential staff positions, inadequate funding of financial aid and the complete lack of support for campus disability resources. On the bright side, some faculty will be rehired, and for the first time in 10 years, the UW System will be funded at a higher level than state corrections.

Perhaps more than anything, in the sporting sense that is, the events of this past Sept. 11 taught us that the games we pay professional men and women so much money to play are really nothing more than that'games.
Elizabeth Elmore hasn't exactly followed the regular career arc for an indie-rock musician. After forming the pop-punk band Sarge in 1995, she achieved moderate success, with Sarge being named by Rolling Stone as the Hot New Band of 1998. In 1999, though, Elmore enrolled in the Northwestern Law School and Sarge imploded soon after. Now on a leave of absence from school, Elmore has formed a new band, Reputation, who plays at Club 770 tonight. She discussed her new musical compatriots and other matters with the Cardinal.
