Kate Roglieri never thought she’d be stuck in this position.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison is known for a lot of things: rigorous academics, memorable traditions, exciting athletics, and stunning views. Despite all of these impressive attributes, I consider the students here to be the most valuable assets to UW’s name. I’ve met many individuals in my three years here. Every single one of them are dedicated, hard-working, and driven. It’s impossible not to compare your professional life to the incredible people that you meet, and it’s something that I’ve struggled with as I’ve found my college identity.
The way that time passes quite honestly astonishes me.
Arielle Graves had never experienced a fear like this before.
The reality of university education throughout the past year and a half has been far from what many college students have pictured. The “normalcy” of college disappeared along with the increasing cases of COVID-19 in March 2020, and it hasn’t been back since. Rising juniors and seniors this semester have barely caught a glimpse of what the University of Wisconsin fully holds; most rising sophomores haven’t even seen a lecture hall, and incoming freshmen are just holding their breath in anticipation of what this semester will bring.
Picture this: you are bundled up in your warmest winter coat, trudging your way to class in the heaviest part of an infamous Wisconsin snowstorm. Thick snowflakes thunder down on you as you carefully maneuver around the slippery slush that covers the crosswalks of University Avenue. Your hands are shoved deep into the warmth of your coat pockets, and you can feel the sweat start to build up on the small of your back - even as the bitter air turns your cheeks and nose a deep red. A single thought crosses your mind: why did I decide to come to school here?
Let’s face it: the start of the spring semester hit us like a train. Classes are now in full swing, and the endless papers and lab assignments are beginning to pile up. Although I am a sucker for the impressive views from the tables of College Library, a change of scenery is always welcomed. After doing some exploring and asking around, I have compiled a brief list of underrated spaces around campus. You may just want to check them out the next time you need to grind out your work!
As the brisk winds of winter begin to stir, it can be hard to remember what it was like to be tan, carefree and healthy. The memories of aimlessly watching hours of Netflix and sitting poolside seem far from the tables of College Library.
