The UW men's hockey team will have to wait another year to beat Minnesota in its house after getting swept at Mariucci Arena this weekend. The team fell short Friday 3-2 and again Saturday by a score of 4-2. The No. 5 Badgers dropped to 3-3-0 in the WCHA (5-3-0 overall) after starting the season 5-0.
Junior runner Simon Bairu made it two in a row on Sunday morning as UW captured its sixth consecutive Big Ten Cross Country Championship at the University of Iowa's newly-christened Ashton Cross Country Course. Bairu won his second overall championship with a time of 23:45, 10 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor in the 8K race.
If there was ever any doubt as to the importance of senior running back Anthony Davis to the Badger offense, those doubts were silenced Saturday as Davis single-handedly ran all over the Illinois defense in a 24-7 victory, tallying more yards than the entire Illini offense. He provided all the offensive power during another game in which the Badgers struggled to supplement the continued dominance of the UW defense.
After all the concern: Would the No. 20 Badgers be able to withstand the desert heat? How would the Badger backfield holdup without senior running back Anthony Davis? It turns out the biggest concern should have been if UW could stand an 88-minute rain delay after Tropical Storm Javier dumped rain on the Arizona turf. In the end it came down to a missed Arizona field goal that left the Badgers coming back to Madison with a 9-7 victory.
Four years after UW's favorite walk-on joined the Badgers, Jim Leonhard has officially made his mark on UW football-so maybe now it's time to stop referring to him as a walk-on.

In between momentum killers such as five minute delays to decide where to place the ball or senior running back Anthony Davis' injury that had all of the record-setting Camp Randall crowd holding their collective breaths, the No. 21 Badgers put on a pretty good game with minor mistakes and no career-threatening injuries.
After losing half of their starters to graduation, this year's women's volleyball team is making up what they lost in experience in height, averaging 6'0\ on the court. While this year's team may be young, newly-named freshman setter Jackie Simpson has a semester up on her freshman teammates after graduating high school early last year, which should prove to be a huge boost for the team.
With senior wide receiver Lee Evans at the helm, success should have been a given. But somehow the Badgers squandered what ended up being a triumphant return from a knee injury two years ago by Evans and floundered mid-season, after preseason picks had the football team winning the Big Ten.
With family and friends gathered to hear the news they had been waiting for since the end of the Badgers' season, Wisconsin junior guard Devin Harris announced his eligibility for the NBA draft Wednesday morning but chose not to sign an agent, allowing him to return to the Badgers if he is dissatisfied with his draft status. In the end, Harris' decision was more of an indecision.
Despite a steady downpour and cool weather, the women's softball team continued in its quest to get back into the Big Ten race and a tournament bid. The Badgers (5-7 Big Ten, 25-21 overall) ended last weekend's series against Purdue with a split and look to rebound this weekend against Northern Iowa (4-12 Missouri Valley, 10-27) on Thursday before playing a weekend two game series against a top-seated Michigan (11-1, 39-7).
Choosing the hottest teams in baseball a mere week into the 162 game season seems as pointless as ESPN's \trial"" of the Yankees for ruining baseball.
MILWAUKEE-Vowing to encourage companies to create more jobs in the United States and to improve foreign relations that he believes have floundered since the war in Iraq began, Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., brought his campaign to Milwaukee Thursday.
As Madison Public Relations Officer Larry Kamholz spoke on national television news programs Tuesday over the disappearance of UW-Madison sophomore Audrey Seiler, police searched door-to-door in Seiler's apartment building and obtained phone records from the night she disappeared. According to WKOW News, police also questioned Seiler's boyfriend.
Ten years ago the Badgers were headed to the Rose Bowl. Brent Moss tallied 158 yards and two touchdowns to be awarded the 1994 Rose Bowl MVP as the Badgers rolled over UCLA, 21-16. The next season the future seemed bright. Wisconsin seemed on the verge of repeating as Big Ten champs and rumors had Moss as a potential Heisman Trophy winner who was 282 yards short of breaking the school rushing yards record.
The Badgers and the University of Minnesota-Duluth entered this weekend's two game series in a battle for second place. A sweep would have moved the Badgers into second, but Friday night's tie and a loss Saturday kept the Badgers in third place heading into the start of this weekend's WCHA playoffs.
