Although several interesting things happened in the world of
sports since the middle of December, one specific incident sticks
out in my mind. I could not help but laugh when I found out that
New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker was fined $10,000 for
unsportsmanlike conduct.

Coming into the season, some Wisconsin fans were not sure what
to expect from the women's basketball team. The loss of three
strong team leaders to graduation in Janese Banks, Danielle Ward
and Jolene Anderson left this year's team with major gaps to fill.
Banks, Ward and Anderson led the Badgers in scoring, combining for
1,201 points, which was just under 57 percent of the team's
total.

Four popular NBA players have recently been flagged for
unsportsmanlike conduct after only a few weeks of regular season
play. Although some sports fans would find these heated actions a
sign of an intense season on the horizon, others may be wondering
if players are pushing the limits too far.

In May 2007, the NCAA men's basketball committee passed a rule

change that has pushed the 3-point arc a step back from 19'9\ to
20'9"". The new line is still three feet shorter than the NBA arc,
which rests a distance of 23'9"" from the hoop.

Losing the top two scorers from the record-setting 2007 squad,
last year's Wisconsin men's basketball team was not projected to
achieve much in the way of national recognition and conference
supremacy. But a dedicated batch of talent led by then-seniors
Brian Butch, Greg Stiemsma, Tanner Bronson and Michael Flowers
defied expectations and led the Badgers to a 2008 Big Ten title and
a trip to the Sweet 16 in March.

contest between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Tampa Bay Rays

tuned in.

As I watched the game ticker run across the bottom of the
television screen Sunday, the one score that caught my eye was the
matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and the St. Louis Rams.

Wisconsin's hockey season has just started up, and I couldn't be
more excited about it. I have never actually played hockey, nor am
I able to stand on ice skates for more than five minutes, but
that's not to say I can't be a huge Badgers hockey fan.

After the first five weeks of regular season play in the NFL,
things have gotten off to an unusual start. Unlikely players have
stepped up and are now league leaders within their positions, and
teams who are used to being on the top of the charts have already
picked up some unexpected losses.

This weekend, I took the opportunity to escape from Madison and
go up north. Although I was staying with my family in a nice
cottage on the lake where the weather was friendly and the bugs
weren't biting, there is one thing that I could not escape from:
the wonderful world of sports.

A disturbing rash of violent downtown crimes has shaken our
campus and city this past year. A lot of lip service has been done
by both university and city officials alike about ways to crack
down on these acts, but, as seems to be the case with so very many
government institutions these days, no one offers much in the way
of actual solutions. We might hear the phrase crime task force""
thrown around, or ""downtown safety initiative"" waved about, but
these always seem to offer very little in terms of actual, tangible
results. To be fair, task forces and initiatives aren't inherently
bad things; it's just that they are nebulous by their very nature.
They become lines that pad lawmakers and officials' resumes, but
many times fail to deliver any specific answers.

As I sat comfortably in the living room with my four fabulous
roommates Sunday night, watching the Packers-Cowboys game and
stuffing our faces with taco pizza and chips felt painless. That
is, up until we saw Green Bay cornerback Al Harris collide with his
teammate, linebacker A.J. Hawk, in the middle of the first quarter.

Two of my favorite movies of all time are Hoosiers and
Wimbledon. Why?"" you ask. Because they are both inspirational
sports narratives featuring an underdog making its way to the
top.
