GREEN BAY, Wis.'With the expectations and countless story lines
leading up to Saturday's Frozen Tundra Classic, a first-time event
staged outdoors at Lambeau Field, the actual game between Wisconsin
and Ohio State seemed like a small act on an overwhelming
bill.

GREEN BAY, Wis.,'In a game that will have lasting memories for
players, coaches and fans alike, the No. 4 Wisconsin Badgers
(14-6-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association, 20-7-2 overall) beat
Ohio State (10-11-2 Central Collegiate Hockey Association, 14-13-4
overall) 4-2 Saturday at Lambeau Field. More an event than a mere
game, the Frozen Tundra Classic lived up to all the hoopla
surrounding the grounds on which the game was played.

Sports betting is a time-honored tradition. Ever since high
school, when I saw my first blank NCAA basketball tournament
bracket with its first-round games filled in, the seeds planted on
each team and the endless possibility for domination or upset,
shame or glory, I thought there was no more exciting way to spend
ten dollars.

Some diligent readers of The Daily Cardinal may have noticed
that 'Conorable Mention' did not run last Friday. For this I am
deeply sorry-but I do have a reason.

Now that bowl week is over and my team is out of the NFL
playoffs, most of life's little joys have been sucked out. So, it's
time to move on to upcoming sports delirium. One such day for which
I wait diligently is the NFL draft. I know it's a long way off, but
if coaching staffs can put in three months of effort, so can I.
This year, however, with the experience I had with this year's Rose
Bowl, I'm going to change my approach to the 2006 NFL draft.

This week marks the seventh consecutive week that the Wisconsin
Badgers (13-1-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association, 18-2-2
overall) have held the No. 1 ranking in collegiate hockey. For
most, a No. 1 ranking serves as a target, especially when
two-time-defending national champions, Denver University (9-5-2
WCHA, 12-10-2) comes knocking at the door looking to snag an
upset.

In all likelihood, Reggie Bush is about to join the ranks of
Mike Garrett, O.J. Simpson, Charles White and Marcus Allen in
becoming the latest USC running back to win the Heisman Memorial
Trophy. I'm fine with that. The kid is a phenomenal athlete.
Watching him break, or in most cases avoid, tackles and carry the
ball down the field is nothing short of electrifying. He may well
be the most talented player to ever suit up for a college football
game.

I consider myself somewhat 'old school' when it comes to sports.
I believe the Four Horsemen offense should not be illegal. I
believe the designated hitter is a crime against society. I believe
in the three-pointer, but I think making three points the
old-fashioned way (a bucket and a foul) is 100 times better. I
believe there is nothing wrong with a baseball game that has only
three hits and one run scored, especially if it's a game-winning
sac-fly. Football should be played with eight men in the box at all
times, and every hockey game should leave fans wondering if they
mistakenly saw a boxing match.

Every red-blooded American loves an underdog. There's something
about a rags-to-riches story that grabs the American interest. When
Boston was down three games to none against the Yankees two
Octobers ago, there wasn't a soul who didn't want them to pull off
a Cinderella victory. Now, I think I can say that with conviction
because, according to research, I'm fairly certain that Yankee fans
don't have souls.

Trades are great. I love trades. For me, the offseason is nearly
as exciting as the regular season. Part of the reason is because
I'm a Cubs fan and, since the day I was born, I've been chanting
'Wait till next year!' like a Zen Buddhist monk contemplating the
meaning of a rock garden.

It would be tough to find two hotter teams in NCAA hockey than
the Wisconsin Badgers and the Colorado College Tigers. This weekend
one team has to cool off, if just a little bit, when the two teams
meet in Madison for the Western College Hockey Association
Conference lead on the line.

This next week is my final midterm. College students are not the
only groups receiving midterm evaluations; the NFL has reached it's
midpoint as well. So, after watching half a season, I'm finally
prepared to check out the Vegas scene and put dough on some
division winners.

October 15 was the best College Football Saturday I've ever not
actually seen. I'll explain.

This week, I wanted to write my column on hockey. Any sort of
hockey. Pro, NCAA, Pee Wee-any of these would have worked. Any
decent column (so I'm told) needs a catchy intro, however. So here
we go.

It seems to me that fantasy football is one of those things
football fans are now obligated to do. It doesn't seem like we have
a choice. ESPN has all those commercials for it. It's impossible to
get on Yahoo! and um... research a paper without being bombarded by
sign-ups for leagues. So, like a good football fan, I succumbed
again this year. The guys in my house and a few extras signed up
for a league on Yahoo!.

Bevell. Bollinger. Sorgi. Stocco. The name changes but the
quarterback stays pretty much the same here in Badgerland. A bunch
of pocket-passers who seem to excel half the time and collapse the
other half. All of them have/had strong arms but were not that
mobile, not that accurate and not that dangerous. But you know
what? I'm OK with all that.

It hadn't been done in 11 years. Since 1994, no Badger football
team had beaten the Michigan Wolverines. Badgers' head coach Barry
Alvarez had never beaten Michigan's Lloyd Carr, but Saturday night,
it all changed.

\I think we have other issues in this country to worry about
that are much more serious,"" San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry
Bonds said to the media when asked about the plethora of
controversies surrounding the not-so-certain Hall of Famer.

The Diesel, as Miami Heat center Shaquille O'Neal is more
affectionately known, added to his illustrious Hall of Fame
credentials this week. He made an arrest. That's right, an arrest.
