Last Wednesday marked the 20th anniversary of a certain
unforgettable moment in college basketball history. In a rivalry
game between Purdue and Indiana on February 23, 1985, then-Indiana
head coach Bobby Knight hurled a chair toward the basket to show
his anger at a questionable foul call. Looking back, this event was
not too surprising because it was a prime example of Bobby Knight
being well... Bobby Knight. What can you expect from a guy who went
on to attack one of his own players before eventually getting fired
by Indiana?

Feb. 20, 2003, was one of the worst days of my life. I never saw
it coming, but it was a day I will never forget. For those of you
reading this who know me, you are probably laughing right
now.

This past weekend was a sad and nostalgic one for any old school
NBA fan. Over the span of four days, not one but two basketball
legends announced that they will be stepping away from the
hardwood-not just until their minor league baseball careers go down
the tubes, but for good.

If you have ever watched a men's basketball game on TV you have
undoubtedly seen the camera pan the student section a number of
times to find a particular blonde wearing her red sweater, sitting
among the band. If you have been to a lot of games at the Kohl
Center you have probably seen this same blonde dressed to kill and
singing the national anthem. Meet Alexis Schrubbe. And fellas, I
hate to break it to you, but she is unavailable.

Why are men's sports more popular than women's sports?

Over the past few years, the top of the Big Ten conference has
not varied much. Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan State
consistently claim the top three spots in the conference. While
these same three teams currently occupy those respective positions,
a new team is trying to make its way into the rotation.

I have never been a huge fan of the NFL. I don't know why, but
for some reason the league has just never appealed to me. It could
be because Sundays are usually my day to attempt to be productive,
or maybe because I don't really like to watch certain classy
athletes-I won't name names-flap their arms like an eagle or
pretend to drop their pants in front of a packed stadium after
scoring a touchdown.

For any red-and-white blooded Badger fan, today is kind of a big
day.

The brooms came out once again for the No. 4 Wisconsin women's
hockey team (12-5-1 WCHA, 18-5-1 overall) this past weekend against
Western Collegiate Hockey Association newcomers, North Dakota
(4-15-1, 7-16-3).

Basketball and the state of Wisconsin are two things not
generally recognized together. Over the next two weeks though, the
best of Wisconsin basketball will come together when all four
in-state NCAA Division I teams face off.

The No. 25 UW men's basketball team (3-1 overall) will take to
the road for the second time this season when it heads east to face
Rutgers (2-1) Saturday night.

Dec. 4, 2002. The place was the Kohl Center, the score 90-80,
and the Badgers were not the team on the left-hand side.

Last weekend, while most UW students were at home enjoying their
Thanksgiving break, the Wisconsin women's hockey team celebrated
the holiday weekend with two sweet victories over then No. 4
Harvard (6-4) and Northeastern (4-0). This weekend, the team will
try to run with their success and hope for something even sweeter
than pumpkin pie-a weekend sweep against top-ranked
Minnesota.

The Wisconsin volleyball team (12-6 Big Ten, 18-8 overall) sent
seniors Marian Weidner and Jill Odenthal out in style with its two
victories in the team's last homestand of the season.

Ireally don't like Thanksgiving. Granted, the four-day weekend
is nice, as is the time spent with family, but in my opinion turkey
is mediocre and I'm getting sick of watching the Detroit Lions and
Dallas Cowboys while the rest of my family is passed out from their
turkey comatose.

The Wisconsin men's basketball team opened up the 2004-'05
season in familiar fashion with Wednesday's 81-42 clobbering of
University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

We're only four days into the NBA season and, unfortunately, I'm
sick of it already. Have I watched a game yet? Nope. Do I know who
had big games in the season openers? Nope. Do I know how well my
future husband Ray Allen did in his first game and how good he
looked while playing? I can imagine, but I won't get into that. So
how can this NBA fan who has been loyal since the days of Blue
Edwards and Eric Murdock (aka the days when the Bucks REALLY
sucked) want to give up her love of the game? Easy-she heard
Latrell Sprewell open his mouth.

Going into Saturday's final Camp Randall contest of the year
against Minnesota, the Badgers seem to have it all. They claim an
undefeated record, have one of the nation's top defenses and are
ranked fourth and fifth in the nation. However, Wisconsin is
determined to claim ownership of one more thing-the Paul Bunyan
Axe.

For any freshman entering his first year at Wisconsin, it can
sometimes be hard to find where he fits in, whether it be in
academics, friendships or athletics. For freshmen forwards Joe
Pavelski and Matt Auffrey, it did not take long to fit in as two of
the latest offensive additions on the No. 5 Wisconsin hockey team
(2-0-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Associaton, 4-0-0 overall).

Last Saturday while you were catching up on some much needed
sleep, the UW men's and women's basketball teams as well as many
others throughout the country were up at the wee hours of the
morning for the first practice of the season. Yes, Midnight Madness
has come and gone, and what were you thinking sleeping through it?
How could you miss the christening of the 2004-05 basketball
seasons?
