After a 16-day break and a first-round bye, the Wisconsin
women's basketball team (20-12) kept its WNIT championship hopes
alive by defeating Arkansas State (21-13) in the second round
Sunday night at the Kohl Center 77-45. Junior sensation Jolene
Anderson scored a game-high 30 points, a career best for the guard.
Anderson also set the UW single-season scoring record by topping
601 points, previously set by alumna Barb Franke in 1996.

In July 2004, a federal appeals court ruled that the leak-safety
standards for the long-awaited nuclear waste depository at Nevada's
Yucca Mountain were too weak. The Environmental Protection Agency
would regard the facility as safe for only 10,000 years (almost
five times the length of time since the birth of Jesus), which,
they were concerned, was not a sufficient amount of time. One
National Academy of Sciences panel had recommended against the site
unless leak safety could be certified for at least 300,000 years.

A bill in the state legislature could further guarantee
protection for those who use service animals such as guide dogs.
Mark Miller, D-Monona, expects the bill, which will align Wisconsin
law with the Americans with Disabilities Act, to pass
unanimously.

The battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe was a defining chapter in the
Badgers' season. All year, the mantra for the Badgers has been
\1-0"" and they have achieved their goal so far. After nearly every
game, however, Head Coach Barry Alvarez has also said, ""I think
the offense has some things to improve on."" Saturday, they finally
did.

1. September 15, 1990 was Alvarez's first win which came over
Ball State in his second game at UW. Barry entered the Madison
scene to the cheers of many fans happy to be rid of former coach
Don Morton. Unfortunatly for the Badgers, the 24-7 win was the only
one of the season. However, Alvarez had his entire team firing on
all cylinders for those four quarters. The defense made an
impressive goal-line stand and made students and alumni alike think
that finally UW would step out of the cellar of the Big Ten.

On Saturday, an Israeli Defense Force helicopter fired two
missiles towards an automobile on a street in a small West Bank
town. According to the BBC, one of the passengers in that car was
Rafat Daraghmeh, a member of a \martyr brigade"" which is linked to
the political party of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat. The
Israeli government claimed that Daraghmeh was planning a ""major
attack"" on Israeli civilians.
