1. September 15, 1990 was Alvarez's first win which came over Ball State in his second game at UW. Barry entered the Madison scene to the cheers of many fans happy to be rid of former coach Don Morton. Unfortunatly for the Badgers, the 24-7 win was the only one of the season. However, Alvarez had his entire team firing on all cylinders for those four quarters. The defense made an impressive goal-line stand and made students and alumni alike think that finally UW would step out of the cellar of the Big Ten.
2. October 3, 1992 was Alvarez's first big win. It came against Kirk Herbstriet and the 12th ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. Setting the tone for later years, UW made it known that they would not be pushovers when the OSU boys came to town. Trailing 10-3 at the end of the half, the Badgers mounted a comeback on the shoulders of Darrell Bevell who went 18-30 with 214 yards passing. At the end UW came out victorious 20-16.
3. January 1, 1994 was Alvarez's first of three victorious trips to the prestigious Rose Bowl. Behind a defense that forced an astonishing six turnovers, running back Brent Moss tallied two touchdowns. Quarterback Darrell Bevell also shuffled in to the endzone from the 21 yardline to lead the Badgers to a 21-16 win over the UCLA Bruins.
4. October 9, 1999 saw a Barry-less Badger football team. Alvarez, out with a knee injury, didn't stay out of this one, however, as the Badgers mounted an emotional come-from-behind win against the Gophers of Minnesota. Toward the end of the second half the Gophers seemed to have things locked up already ... that is until quarterback Brooks Bollinger launched an 81-yard touchdown pass to Nick Davis. A refocused Badger team forced the game into overtime when, on the strength of a Ron Dayne run, they set up a 35- yard game-winning chip shot for kicker Vitaly Pisetsky.
5. January 1, 1999 was victory two of three for Alvarez's Badgers in the Rose Bowl. Once again the Badgers defeated UCLA and their highly touted offense. Ron Dayne put on an offensive display of his own rushing for four touchdowns and gaining 264 yards. The Badger defense had no problem denying a last second effort from the Bruins when Wendell Bryant's sack sealed the coffin for UW.
6. November 13, 1999 marked a historic event for all of NCAA football. On that day UW running back Ron Dayne rushed for 216 yards against the Iowa Hawkeyes and places his name atop the all-time NCAA rushing list. It was a 41-3 rout for Alvarez and the Badgers but nonetheless a game that must be implanted in every Badger fan's heart.
7. January 1, 2000 was the day Barry officially turned UW into a top tier football school. Winning back-to-back Rose Bowls was something that no Big Ten school had ever done, but the Badgers had no problem rewriting that little piece of history. Dayne actually shared the spotlight with the defense as he rushed for 200 yards while the defense held Stanford to negative five rushing yards.
8. December 29, 2000 saw the Badgers and Barry in another holiday bowl game, the Sun Bowl. This, however, was a game of note. A 14- point comeback is always worthy of press, especially when it takes place in the last quarter and a half. UW was led by a combination of now NFL players Michael Bennet, Chris Chambers and Brooks Bollinger. Perhaps the most memorable play of the game was UW defenseman Ben Herbert making a stop on UCLA's fake field goal attempt late in the fourth quarter.
9. December 28, 2002 continued the theme for the Badgers; another year, another comeback, another bowl game victory. The 2002 Alamo Bowl was a heart-stopper to be sure. Stranded at their own 20, the Badgers rode the arm of Brooks Bollinger yet again. Alvarez and Bollinger orchestrated an 80-yard, 10 play drive and tied the game with 51 seconds left It was smooth sailing as the Badgers entered familiar territory-overtime. Taking advantage of a missed field goal by Colorado kicker Pat Broughman, the offense put the game in the hands of Mike Allen who punched it through the uprights from 37 yards out to win 31-28.
10. November 25, 2002 marked Anthony Davis' day to shine. In a back and forth win over University of Minnesota, Davis toyed with the Gophers as if they were but chipmunks, Davis accumulated 301 rushing yards and established himself as a premier back. The game was a nailbiter complete with lead changes and turnovers, least of which was Jim Leonhard's. Leonhard's first pick of the day came at the Badgers' 24- yard line and ground the Gophers' attack to a halt. His second on the day was his 10th of the year.
