Gov. Scott Walker's controversial proposal to split UW-Madison from
the UW System and grant the university public authority status
through Chancellor Biddy Martin's New Badger Partnership is dead,
Republican officials said Thursday.

Lords of the Trident recently won WUD's Battle of the Bands to open
for of Montreal at the new Union South. The band is comprised of
all local boys who are either Madison alums or students, or
attending MATC, and I was recently able to talk to vocalist Ty
Christian, who goes by the stage name Fang VonKillenstein. The
band, who I've previously described as ""GWAR-lite,"" will be
playing a show that they have been trying to get for a year now,
with Bible of the Devil at the Frequency.

This week I picked up a six-pack of Furthermore's Irish peat fueled
Three Feet Deep. This brew should be taken in like a meal. It
leaves your mouth feeling like you just ate a pound of boxty and
its substantial peatiness can easily take over your palate, leaving
little room for other flavors.

If you are strolling down the beer aisle looking for something to
quell your desire for a fine American malt soda, then Flying Dog's
Seasonal ""Garde Dog: Bière de Garde"" is not what you want. But if
you are looking for an adventure in potability, a nice beverage to
live up to the standards of your gourmet pizza or something to
impress your friends who want to be French (but are not French
themselves), then look no further. This beer boasts having the
sweet, spicy, malty taste that a traditional French farmhouse ale
should. Garde Dog is everything it says it is, and it's
refreshing—a nice break from the norm.

I've always wanted to try a beer from the pun masters at Shmaltz
Brewing Company, but I have also feared that the beers would not be
as enjoyable as the clever titles of their He'Brew line—R.I.P.A.
Rye, Messiah Bold (which sounds like a font name), Genesis Ale and
this week's pick, the Rejewvenator.

Late fall may bring howling wind and blustering temperatures; but
luckily we have several enjoyable devices to combat plunging
thermometers and falling leaves. It is time to break out the
oversize sweaters and campfire songs, time to jump into leaf piles,
light Jack-O-Lanterns and it is time to break out the stouts. These
beers are the liquid answer to autumn's spooky, chilly nights. A
particularly warming example is Old Rasputin Russian Imperial
Stout, which fills one's heart with fire just as the Russian icon
filled the Imperial Court with controversy and lustful abandon.

This week, the New Beer Desk moved a few blocks away from its usual
location in the bowels of Vilas Hall and posted up with a few
friends for an on-location New Beer Thursday at the public opening
of the Underground Food Collective Kitchen on East Mifflin Street
and Webster Street. We were greeted by a inviting and unpretentious
space that looks and feels nothing like its iconic predecessor Café
Monmartre.

For the last couple of weeks the New Beer Desk has been talking up
Oktoberfest. We are celebrating the style and tradition this week
by taking a look at the großvater (aka grosvater, aka grandaddy) of
modern Oktoberfestbier as well as turning you on to several more
local alternatives.

This past weekend the No. 13 Wisconsin Badgers men's hockey team
opened their 2010-2011 campaign by participating in the Ice Breaker
tournament in St. Louis, Mo.

Last week in New Beer Thursday I brought up Oktoberfest beers
without actually reviewing one of the style. So this week and next
the New Beer Desk is going to take an in-depth look at the
style.

Choosing a beer is a lot like renting a movie, there are so damn
many and I would like to experience every one, but all I have is
ten bucks and one night. So I shop and I shop until I find a new
beer that looks worthy with the right price and finally I decided
on this friendly looking chap. At home I crack it open and think
and taste and enjoy.

With the summer months come the summer movies. This could mean a
multitude of things, as the films that come out during the
scorching season can be terrific, like ""The Dark Knight,"" or they
can be pure wastes of time, like ""G-Force."" To help guide you
through 2010's summer movies, The Daily Cardinal's Arts section
previews the movies you have to see and you have to avoid.

The ever-raging abortion debate has made numerous headlines
recently because of the near-constant protests by pro-life groups
outside the Madison Surgery Center. As an avid proponent of a
woman's right to choose, I always react to these demonstrations
with anger and disgust. Nothing is more insulting and disrespectful
to the women who have made this difficult and emotional choice than
crowds spitting misnomers like ""murder"" and holding poster boards
displaying pictures of aborted fetuses. Just thinking about it
infuriates me.

the university disciplines students.

My version of hell used to be an eternally cheeseless existence
in a blistering Mexican desert with no sunscreen, water or amusing
tour guide with a thick moustache. That's until I watched a 17 Kids

The Associated Students of Madison Student Judiciary Committee
