Freshman Brad Davison couldn’t stop smiling at the post-game dais after Wisconsin’s 85-56 exhibition victory over UW-Stout. His euphoria remained present when he walked off the podium in his red Wisconsin sweat-jacket and khaki pants, almost forgetting his backpack in the process, as he thanked the reporters in front of him before exiting the interview room.

In a few weeks, once winter strikes Madison, Nick Nelson will spend more time figuring out what he’s going to wear around campus than what he was previously used to. Two years ago, while Nelson attended the University of Hawaii, he went to late-fall and winter classes in basketball shorts and slides. But his decision to play football closer to his home in Glenarden, Maryland as well as in a bigger conference, has forced him to make a fashion adjustment: He now spends more time deciding what he’s going to wear out of the house.

Northwestern’s non-conference season was chock full of inconsistencies. In a 41-17 loss to Duke, senior running back Justin Jackson averaged only 2.6 yards-per-carry, finishing the game with only 18 yards on the ground. One week later, against Bowling Green, he ran for 121 yards and three scores. Junior quarterback Clayton Thorson similarly struggled against the Blue Devils, completing only 38 percent of his passes and throwing two interceptions and no touchdowns. One week later, he threw for almost 400 yards and two scores.

NEW YORK — Moments after knocking off No. 1 overall seed Villanova 65-62 in Buffalo last Saturday, No. 8 seed Wisconsin (27-9) senior forward Nigel Hayes went over to the crowd to find his family. His mother, Talaya Davis, gave Hayes a hug and screamed loudly in his ear. His stepfather, Albert Davis Sr., teary-eyed, gave him a hug as well.
