Gather ‘round folks, and I shall spin you a yarn. It’s a mighty tale that I’ve to tell. A tale of men. A tale of movies. A tale standing taller than the mightiest oak in the forest. A legend, more accurately—a legend about roller disco.

So there’s a rad thing happening in Madison next weekend. Actually, rad doesn’t quite catch it. There’s an incredible thing happening next weekend in Madison.

So I saw “12 Years a Slave,” and it was remarkable. You should all see it. It’s beautifully shot and acted, it’s an incredible story, or at least I wish it was incredible, and it’s told as well as any other.

Well folks, it’s Halloween again, which means it’s time for the obligatory writing on horror movies. But I’d like to do something a little different, if y’all don’t mind.

So, you might have noticed last week the first poster for Wes Anderson’s next film, “The Grand Budapest Hotel” was released, followed quickly by the first trailer. And if you’ve read anything I’ve written basically ever, you’ll be aware that Wes Anderson is kind of my favorite director ever, period. If not then, well, he is, and also why don’t you read this stuff?

Brace yourselves, we’re gonna get a little political today. With the release of “The Fifth Estate,” one of the most divisive figures of the 21st century, Julian Assange, has finally been approached through a cinematic lens, and the results are, apparently, middling (it’s a pun, sort of).

So I saw “Gravity” over the weekend. More importantly, I saw “Gravity” in IMAX 3D and in about the third row. So yeah, I can only highly recommend it. It was an unbelievable experience.

OK guys, so it’s time to face some facts. There’s going to be another “Star Wars” film. We can’t stop it. And J.J. Abrams is going to direct it. That much we know.

I’d like to begin this week by officially endorsing the James Franco Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor campaign. Spring Break Foevah.

So there’s this movie called “Upstream Color.” Lately I’ve taken to easily calling it my favorite movie of the summer—and cautiously, my favorite movie, period.

In anticipation of the fall film season, two of the Cardinal’s film writers—Kailee Andrews and Austin Wellens—compiled a list of the five movies for which they’re each most excited to see over the next few months.

There’s no reason I should look back fondly on the New England of the ’80s. I wasn’t there, couldn’t have been. And yet with their new album, The Silver Gymnasium, Okkervil River has left me waxing poetic for experiences I haven’t had, nostalgic for things I’ve imagined.

Ah, summer. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, the lake is… being a lake. For three months at least, the world is bright and beautiful. What’s a better way to spend them than by shutting yourself into a dark room with a collection of strangers to be distracted by light and sound for a couple hours?
(05/02/13 4:03am)
OK, so guys, more “Arrested Development” is on the way. It’s going to be here soon. It’s a big deal.

Movies are ridiculous in the absolute best way—most of the time.
(04/11/13 5:13am)
OK so I know this is a week late, but Roger Ebert died. Oh man. I mean, just in terms of pure ability to get inside movies, to understand how and why they connected with us on our most basic level and in terms of being able to take us from laughter to insight as quickly as the best of the movies he loved… he can’t really ever be replaced. We’d be insane to try.

Movies are all about perception. And not in an “our perception of a subjective reality created by the editing of time and space is what defines out movie going experiences” sort of way.
(03/21/13 4:29am)
Oh man. SXSW. Okay, here we go, get ready, there’s kind of a lot.

“Big Ass Spider!” by Mike Mendez
(03/07/13 5:51am)
After having a disturbing number of conversations in which people informed me that their favorite director is Christopher Nolan, it occurred to me that there’s a long, long list of directors that most people aren’t, but everyone should be, familiar with.
