Every summer in Scandinavia, Europeans celebrate the summer solstice with an array of festive activities, such as traditional dancing, gourmet cooking, and lots of drinking. Extravagant clothes are worn, music is played, and sometimes pagan rituals are practiced during the longest day of the year, where sunlight is constant and the celebrations are continuous for weeks.

Godzilla is an international cultural phenomenon that has inspired 35 total films. The gigantic ocean lizard is one of the most iconic creations in global entertainment history. Originally created by Japanese filmmakers in 1954, Hollywood has generated three total Godzilla films, the latest being “Godzilla: King of the Monsters.” It was a visually stunning display of CGI perfection, yet also a disastrous compilation of storytelling.

Widely raved about for its dark humor and story, Bill Hader’s HBO dark comedy series “Barry” wrapped up its second season Sunday night, leaving us with a rather disappointing episode but a promising cliffhanger.

There was never a bigger or greater TV show in history. Originally airing in 2011, HBO’s “Game of Thrones” spanned eight seasons and helped transform the fantasy genre through its human-centered drama, complex characters and a captivating plot. With the series ending Sunday night, most fans, including myself, were extremely disappointed with how it ended.

Already grossing nearly $2.5 billion worldwide at the box office, “Avengers: Endgame” is perhaps the biggest film event of the year. Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe waited a year for the studio to deliver an epic conclusion that united all of the superheroes to defeat the mad titan Thanos, and directors Joe and Anthony Russo did not disappoint.

After last week’s somewhat rushed and disappointing episode, HBO aired one of the best episodes of “Game of Thrones” by a long shot this Sunday. Two weeks ago director Miguel Sapochnik gave us “The Long Night,” the giant battle at Winterfell against the Army of the Dead, which brought the remaining characters together to fight for their lives in a spectacular array of CGI and fantasy spectacles. Now he directed “The Bells,” an episode that not only shocked audiences and delivered stunning action but was rooted in powerful, emotional suspense that honored its complex characters.

Superorganism is a well-oiled machine (assuming in this metaphor that machines are coalitions of incredibly theatrical, talented and artistic people and “well-oiled” refers to their well-put-togetherness and not to the amount of oil on them). The quirky octet displayed their musicianship with a multi-faceted and highly entertaining show at the Majestic on May 1.

After a gigantic episode involving the war at Winterfell between the surviving heroes and the Army of the Dead, episode four of the eighth and final season of “Game of Thrones” entitled “The Last of the Starks” offered both recovery from last week and a build up to the show’s spectacular finish. In one of the best-written episodes in the series, the show laid the framework for yet another battle and the show’s climax.

It isn’t often that a Broadway legend like Bernadette Peters ends up in Madison, so it was a treat to see this two-time Tony award winner at the Overture on April 19 for her traveling live show, “A Night with Bernadette Peters.” Her show was like taking a trip back in time fifty years, to the works of Sinatra and Sondheim, the era of glamour and pizzazz, and the constant objectification and belittlement of women.

It’s starting to look like it might be a dry summer in terms of big game releases, with not a lot of solid releases pinned down. There’s always the chance that a bunch of groundbreaking titles will start lining up their release dates in the coming weeks, but this late in the year it’s doubtful. There’s a precedent for quiet game industry summers. Even if nothing really big happens, plenty of lower key gems are on their way to help us all pass our time in the sun (or out of it).
