Freakfest is one of the most anticipated and well-known weekends in Madison. With my freshman experience behind me, I was ready for round two. MisterWives and Timeflies were performing at this year’s Capitol stage, two artists who are experts when it comes to partying and hosting an insane concert in Madtown. Last October, Timeflies rocked out at the Orpheum Theater. This Halloween weekend was MisterWives’ third time in Madison this year, after playing at the High Noon Saloon in March and then at the Majestic in September. They just can’t get enough of this city—and I can’t complain.

Before I dive into a detailed breakdown of this weekend’s events at The Orpheum Theater, I’ll keep it short and offer this generalization: Man, oh man, the last few days were a great time to be a fan of dance music in Madison. The city’s jam junkies turned out Friday to see their revered heroes in Sound Tribe Sector 9 melt some faces and Saturday, it seemed, everyone in Madison came out for what has become something of a tradition in our city: Cherub’s yearly visit.

To some, music is a mission, with each chord dripping in politics and each bar directed at some critic’s praise or curse. I’ve been one of those critics for a few years now, an accessory to those ideas that music needs some kind of inherent politics or grand, meta concept. It’s a conversation worth having, but it betrays what made so many of us fall in love with music in the first place: the excitement of a stomping beat, clapping your hands and the smile of a warm melody.

He’s already released two studio albums and 10 mixtapes. Now, in promotion of his recently released third album GO:OD AM, Mac Miller gears his national tour towards the Badger State. Over the next two weeks, his tour schedule is packed tight with 10 concerts across the country, and Wisconsin is seventh on the list. The Philly born and raised rapper will blast the Madison audience with sound from his new album Saturday in the Orpheum Theatre

Many times collaborations between great artists don’t work. This isn’t because of a lack of musical ability or poor production, but instead the artists are focused on their style or outperforming the other and not about the mix as a whole. Other times, artists work so impeccably well together that you almost forget it’s a collaboration and look forward to the new group’s next project. Big Grams, the hip-hop project from Big Boi and Phantogram, falls into the latter category with their debut, self-titled EP.

The Minnesotan indie-pop band Hippo Campus released their second EP “South” Oct. 2, capturing all my spare time, so consider this a formal apology to my bosses and professors for the work I avoided.

Travis Scott has been a bit of a buzzword for the last few years in the hip-hop community. After signing with Grand Hustle records and landing production spots on both G.O.O.D. Music’s Cruel Summer and Kanye’s Yeezus, people became curious over Yeezy’s newest disciple. “Who is Travis Scott?” some asked. Following 2 EPs and several delays, Scott makes his grand entrance on the debut LP Rodeo. But, upon completion, both new listeners as well as adamant followers of the young rapper may still be asking, “Who is Travis Scott?”

I can’t dance. I feigned my way through grade school talent shows, stumbled over my feet at high school homecoming dances, hoping that one day I would grow out of it. A few weeks into my second year here at UW-Madison, and I found an unofficial dance studio with live music that accepts my awkward dance moves.

If you didn’t know better, you might mistake the band members of Hippo Campus for a group of regular college students. However, while most students are cramming for midterms, this band is opening for Walk The Moon at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado.

It’s been a hot minute since Speedy Ortiz last hit Madison; or, more specifically, just a few months short of a year since they demolished Live on King Street, opening for tUnE-yArDs. The appearance felt like a bit of a victory lap after the release of 2013’s triumphant Major Arcana and 2014’s equally massive “Real Hair” EP, but it wasn’t the first time they had played the city.

It’s easy to see where Speedy Ortiz’s clever, biting lyrics come from. Sadie Dupuis, the band’s frontwoman, recently received her Master of Fine Arts degree in poetry from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and her way with words is clearly depicted in their newest album, Foil Deer. Since the band’s first release, Major Arcana in 2013 and 2014’s EP, “Real Hair,” Speedy Ortiz’s songwriting style has transformed. They have undergone a metamorphosis that took them from a talented garage band to a lyrical force with which to be reckoned.

Revelers would be wise to arrive early in the day to experience all that the festival has to offer, including a myriad of local artists playing the Terrace Stage, the silent “Wisco Disco” and a variety of art installations and interactive attractions. Alongside these daytime attractions, singer-songwriter Nick Hakim will kick off festivities on the Main Stage with his 3:00 set, setting the stage for a big day of music with his haunting hybrid of R&B, jazz and folk music.

It’s that time again to round up your friends and head to a concert put on by our talented and entertaining student a cappella group, the MadHatters. Many people may think of “Alice in Wonderland” when hearing the name and while they may not be insane, the Hatters have some tricks up those jacket sleeves.

The Majestic Theater hosted an eclectic, sold-out crowd March 23 for one of the industry’s truest renaissance men, California producer/musician/visual artist Scott Hansen, better known as Tycho. While Hansen has been writing and producing albums as Tycho for over a decade, he now tours with a full band and an artistically thoughtful visual show that he designed himself. Tycho, every bit as accomplished a graphic artist as he is a musician, has been producing visual art for years under the name ISO50. Following in the wake of his 2014 album Awake, Tycho brought his unique blend of ambient post-rock and synth music on the road with a coherent vision that translated perfectly into his new live show.

As the warm air finally found it’s way to Madison everyone came out of hibernation. Between the Big Ten tournament hype and wonderful weather on the Terrace everybody was looking to take to the streets at night, but if you weren’t headed to Union South Friday night you missed out on a good show. Mod Sun based out of Bloomington, Minnesota brought his crew of rappers in the good old RV as part of their “Look Up” tour. It was hard not to like the vibes rolling through the crowd the entire night with the hippy-hop that was going on. Some kid's mom was even in the back of the crowd jamming the entire show.

“I’m not a real big talker, that’s not my forte,” Alabama Shakes lead singer and guitarist Brittany Howard said toward the beginning of the Overture show Tuesday night. “I end up saying something stupid.”

Last Wednesday, The Majestic Theater hosted Paper Diamond, a DJ and producer who’s made quite a name for himself in the realm of big-room electronic music. The Rain Drops Tour, named for the newly released “Rain Drops” EP, has extended across the country and beyond with all of the energy and charisma that Paper Diamond’s fans have come to expect. I’ve always maintained that while there is absolutely a time and place for heavy bass music that serves only the functional purpose of making people “rage,” there’s a disgusting lack of creativity within the sea of artists whose only goal is to follow that formula and melt their fans’ faces with heavy bass drops. That being said, if there is in fact a time and place for incessant bass-dropping, it’s a tour like the Rain Drops Tour, but it’s not the time nor the place for me, or anyone looking for anything more than that musically.

On Wednesday, March 4, MisterWives stopped at the High Noon Saloon in Madison, on their Our Own House tour, with openers Handsome Ghost and BØRNS. I had never been to this concert venue before, but I immediately became accustomed to it and liked the intimacy and closeness that came across even though it was a fairly large stage.

Where does the modern musician stake their claim? Sometimes, the kickoff is swift and explosive. Other times, it’s as humble as a “dirt poor but enthused 20-year-old from Madison” and a collection of self-made indie spunk tinged with a psychedelic swirl. Snufkin’s first EP, “Snufkin EP,” follows those humble roots with its few songs recorded in a basement with the DIY sensibility that so many rock bands ascribe to.

BØRNS. the stage name for Garrett Borns, will take the stage Wednesday at High Noon Saloon on East Washington Avenue.
