I don’t think that the majority of us have the full ability to comprehend what addiction is. We use that word carelessly, as we do most words in our life. We claim to be addicted to that new song by Kanye or the guacamole at Chipotle but as obliviously as we may insist otherwise we do not need these things for survival or for some semblance of peace in our mind. True addiction is a clawing need inside of your skin that breathes with a life of its own. It is the desperate longing for something so intense that nothing but the object of your addiction exists. It is a hunger so deep you can feel it in every crevice of your mind. While we may never understand what it truly means to go through something like that, words left behind by others can show us a rare glimpse into the mental battle addiction entails.

What makes a great musical? More importantly, what makes a musical great when it’s already set in New York, has the turbulence of when the city was developing and masterfully reveals to us the beginnings of it being the place where dreams are heralded. “Newsies” simply adds the whimsical charm of misunderstood rebellious young men, leading a ragtag group of lost boys to a cause that marks the beginning of change. The musical is based on the 1992 Disney movie that starred a young Christian Bale, which sadly paled in comparison to other Disney masterpieces of the time such as “The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “Tarzan” etc. So considering its history you would think the musical stood no hope of being such a hit, that is if it hadn’t immediately generated a large cult following that called themselves “Fansies.” The rest, as the cliché says, is history.

I can’t dance. I feigned my way through grade school talent shows, stumbled over my feet at high school homecoming dances, hoping that one day I would grow out of it. A few weeks into my second year here at UW-Madison, and I found an unofficial dance studio with live music that accepts my awkward dance moves.

Tuesday night the Majestic promised a stacked lineup of female hip-hop artists. First up was Denver-born soul hip-hop songstress Povi. Though at past performances she has glistened on the stages of Denver and her current home Oakland, Calif., unfortunately her Madison performance fell slightly short. While the crowd was hyped up on excitement for the acts to follow, no one was really familiar with Povi’s music, so audience engagement and participation was low. Even with the music itself being relatively unknown, it was nice to bop around to, and I did marvel at the beauty of Povi’s vocal strength, that is until the peak of awkward concert events occurred.

Known for their quick starts, the Badgers impressed Saturday as they accelerated and never looked back right from the gate—the tailgate that is. The impressive debut to the 2015 season witnessed a flurry of early action in what amounted to a 22-0 halftime lead over opponent Miami (OH) in arrests.

The world around us would be even more bleak without the presence and occurrence of rhythmic, vocalized, expiratory and involuntary actions, such as laughter. But why? Laughter does not necessarily mean that you’re happy, or even content. Perhaps that’s exactly why. Even in the deep pit of absolute misery, we can laugh with reckless abandon. We have such an ability to laugh, even if we may not always be cognizant of its existence. Some of the best laughs I’ve had have been in moments when life has pummeled me black and blue into a bloody mess of despair. That’s when you sometimes need to laugh the hardest to acknowledge that nothing at the end of the day seems quite so apocalyptic if you can simply laugh at it.

On the fifth floor of Lathrop Hall, every new cohort is taught the pride of the phrase that heads this article. Each student shouts in boisterous unison the phrase that welcomed them from across the country. Students proudly hail from cities like Phoenix, Ariz., Brooklyn, N.Y., the Bay Area in California, Chicago, Ill., and, of course, Madison, Wis. They hold dear the cultures they carry together in this room. They are the movement of the hip-hop and urban arts scholarship program First Wave, who speak with poetry, rap, beat, vocal, dance and visual art, and I am blessed to use my talents for this program.

Why do people go to concerts? It seems like a superfluous question considering the answer should be quite obvious. Live music holds a certain appeal. What’s more, seeing an artist you know perform a song that you remember intimately right in front of you is an unrivaled experience. But this holds true for all genres of music. Some concerts, though, are more than just the sum of the music the artist will put on a show for. Some attract the crowd because the artist is also the performer. Some concerts are frequented because you want to feel the music. You might hope that you get such a concert from most dance music artists, but with Kiesza, you go in knowing that. And that alone is a gift by itself.

As much as I hated to admit it, seeing Rice bloom before me as an apparition (whether from whatever’s beyond this world or from my subconscious) was making me lose my nerve. Maybe he (or I) knew something about this case I didn’t. I took the picture of the bull crane from my pocket and looked it over. Seeing that strange thing again reminded me of the girl in the tartan comforter, who gave me the Regent lead in the first place.

The juror’s decision in the trial of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev came back yesterday and he has been found guilty on all 30 charges, including the 17 charges that carry the death penalty. This is an incredibly unsurprising outcome, seeing that Tsarnaev plead guilty, his lawyer’s opening remarks were “it was him,” and that the defense did not cross examine a single witness called by the prosecution, the majority of whom were survivors of the attack. The trial, however, is still far from over. The jury must begin deliberations again, this time over whether or not Tsarnaev will receive the death penalty.
